Have you called a State Farm agent? That's who we are covered with. I did hear something this week though, that State Farm was thinking about restricting coverage for breeds such as the Pitbull and Rottweiler...has anybody out there heard anything on that??? I am going to call my agent on Monday to find out what the deal is.

Yes, I tried State Farm (they have my car insurance)and the answer was a resounding "no". This ban on "vicious" dogs supposedly went into effect for most insurance companies about two years ago.

I believe both State Farm and Geico have national policies that are non-breed specific. You should not be denied insurance unless your dog has bitten someone. I would check with State Farm's national office, since my information was from last year about the one-bite rule.

The AKC is also piloting a program with Travellers Insurance with no breed restrictions. Take a look at the following link and scroll down to the "Help With Homeowner's Insurance" section.

as for me, if you cant insure my home, you cant insure my cars, if my agent EVER threatened to drop my insurance....he would lose it all, and that would go for my multitude of family members also who would drop immediately!!! I deal with allstate...no questions asked!!! If this ever changes, i will just go elsewhere for all my insurance needs!!!

I was at my vet and they had a poster for either State Farm or Allstate, that had a group photo of differant breeds with a caption "we can all bite" then it listed the basics for haveing a better socialized dog.

So I'm sure a company with a poster like this would insure a Rott. Just wish I noted wich company

Thanks to everyone for your replies and suggestions. I'm very happy to hear about the Travellers deal...hopefully it will come to Florida soon. I'm beginning to wonder if the rejections I got were decisions of individual agents as opposed to the national companies. I would have expected it if my dog had had a bite history..but she does not...she's really just a large lap dog

Rotties and home owners' insurance

I had a terrible time trying to find home owner's insurance when I bought a new home because I own a rottie. When I called the Florida Insurance Commissioner's office to ask for names of companies who WOULD be willing to write me a policy, I was told that in the state of Florida there are NO companies who will cover homes with rotties or pits and that some of the companies had banned up to ten different breeds!! Has anyone else come up against this and if so, how did you resolve it ( aside from the obvious solution...)?

As an agent and a claims adjuster I can tell you for some companies the company has breed bans for others such as state farm, and farmers it is up to the agent. Before that upsets you agents are responsible for their book of business . if they have few claims they get higher bonuses. Some people as we know are uniformed about rotts, pits dobes ect and there will not right any. I will ony right a home with one of these breeds if I am allowed to see and pet the dog. I the dog has an exceptable temperment great if not then I refuse the business.

I do not live in FL, but I am insured through USAA.. When I set up my insurance, my agent actually gave me a deduction for having a security system when I mentioned my boy!!!
after she asked if he has ever bitten anyone, which was a fair question.....

I just bought a house (Nov. 30) and when we (me and my Ins. agent) got to the part about pets there was a pause. I have had homeowners (when I was previously married) and car ins. with Erie for 16/17 years. It would have been funny if I wasn't so worried. He said," Uh, we don't discriminate but...". To make a long story short I had to fax them all of his training certificates, his CGC certificate AND I had to take him in to meet Charlie (the agent). After all of that they gave me the insurance. I did have State Farm in the back of my mind though and I would have switched everything else (car, life). I do think had I not had a good relationship with them for such a long time that I probably would have been denied. But, hey, they don't discriminate . Although he did say if I had a Pit there is no way I would have gotten insurance with them.

When we baught our house and moved in three years ago my Geico agent never asked any questions about pets. However I do have all of my insurance through them.
