renters/home owners insurance for rottie owners

We are trying to obtain renters insurance and not having any luck. Our current insurance company, Allstate, will not provide this type of coverage to any household that has a rottie or pitbull. We need help, we are tired of being rejected because our wonderful dog, Mick, has been generically labeled as a "bad breed". Please help.

There have been lots of discussions on this. I'm not American, so can't remember the companies, but try a search on "insurance". Make sure you choose to search in all open forums and archives.

Do companies even ask if you own a dog? I mean, do you have to keep them updated all the time? Seems kind of silly to me. . .our insurance couldn't care less whether or not we own a dog.

Try State Farm, they will insure you as long as your dog does not have a history of biting. You also can't have done any bite work training with them.

Try Commercial Mutual. They were wonderful even when I had an incident. They sent an investigator out to meet my Max before passing judgement. And they not only did not cancel me but my rates did not go up!! A very Fair, Unpredijuce company

Thanks to everyone who responded to this topic. I called State Farm and received renter's coverage on-the-spot.
I am very impressed with the results of this forum; now I know where to turn with rottie questions in the future.
Insured and Happy,
Susan

Lets just say at the time you got the insurance are you obligated to call them and tell them you got a puppy or a dog. Most people do that without even a second thought. Who would be thinking if they got a poodle "I better run home and call the insurance company and tell them we got a dog" its crazy. I think its another way for insurance companies that accept people with dangerous breeds to make more money. I for one don't even tell people that I have Rottweilers and they are licensed as mixed breeds. Its a modern day witch hunt.

I have renters insurance from state farm and at the time I had a dog and they never even asked me and I never gave the information out. I'm getting a rottie puppy in a month and I wasn't even thinking about it. If they don't ask then it probably isn't that important to them. Good luck!

I just got a quote from State Farm myself. She didn't even ASK me if I had dogs. At the end, I asked her if it made any difference if I owned a dog (or two). I told her we had two mixed breeds, but didn't go into detail that one's part Rottie. She said it wasn't a problem unless either dog had a history of biting, or if we were training them as protection dogs. Neither is the case, so we're likely going to go with State Farm for coverage.

I became another victim of rottie prejudice/injustice today. The homeowner's insurance company that has covered this house for years sent a spy out (I would have gladly showed them my dogs and excellent situation). They are cancelling my insurance simply because "presence of rottweiler". I am bringing them my entire collection of hero rottie stories, but will be looking for another insurer. Thanks for the information, it comes at at valuable time.

Stellamarie, do try State Farm! We have 6 rotties and 1 bulldog. Our insurance agent comes once a year, takes pictures, plays with our dogs, then leaves. It does help to have some certificates around,I have their CGC titles in frames on the walls! Do be aware more and more insurance companys are not Rottweiler friendly! One I know of personally is Heritage! Good luck!

My Rottie has no papers registering him as a purebread (he was a rescue) so the insurance company has no way to prove he is a Rottie. So according to me, he is a mixed breed dog who just looks like a Rottweiler.

Same here. Gretchen was a stray, so although she's obviously a Rottie we don't know for certain that she's purebred. Not that it matters, because our carrier doesn't seem to care that we even own a dog.

An update--sometime it may pay to "fight City Hall" so to speak. When the homeowner carrier stated they were going to drop me, I sent an extensive packet detailing truthful Rottweiler information, rottweiler "hero" stories I've collected, and detailing my efforts to be a responsible owner. The company has not responded officially, but they have put my check through, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Turbo, you are funny.
My insurance didn't care if I have dogs either. The question never came up and I didn't even know that some insurance company don't insurance homes with 'aggressive' dogs.
