Chicago DID IT!!!!

If you never buy another issue of DOG WORLD magazine; buy the April 2002 issue!!!

If you live in Chicago and allow your dog to run unleashed an it results in a bite, you might spend some time in jail :D

If the dog is deemed dangerous (note: if the DOG is deemed dangerous....not BREED....DOG) you have 10 days to neuter, microchip and purchase no less than $100,000 of liability insurance..... at your expense of course :D

IN ADDTION (the article goes on to say...) in several places in the dangerous DOG ordinance...the wording was changed from "dangerous dog" to DANGEROUS DOG OWNER reflecting the role irresponsible dog ownership plays in the behavior of their dogs.

Alderman Shirley Coleman.....(remember her?? "Ban Pit Bulls and Rottweilers....force those breed owners to carry heavy insurance....BSL is needed... blah blah blah") well she assembled a task force of Veterinarians, ACO's, ASPCA, HSUS personel...etc....who got together and drafted the DANGEROUS DOG ACT.

Isn't it funny how if you turn to people who KNOW animals and behavior....instead of off-the-cuff emotions and panic....very intelligent laws and ordinances can be passes that rid the streets OF dangerous DOGS.....and kick their owners square in the teeth :D

Forget Cleveland......CHICAGO ROCKS!!!!! :D

Wow! Shirley Coleman did this???

I sent several E mails to her about this issue. I hope the news media picks up on this and lets people know OWNERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DOGS!

I wish Ohio would move its' position toward this kind of thinking.

I will have to E mail Shirley and say job well done...:)

YAY!!!! I love it that it refers to the OWNERS !!!!!

This is really a big step in the right direction. We need to get this kind of thing in Philadelphia instead of the ridiculous legislation being proposed here.

The credit for these changes goes to Steve Dale from WGN Radio -- Pet Central. He was the one that got all of these people to sit down and talk. Without him, now of this would have happened and Chicago would still be living in the dark ages.

I also read that Annette. Gotta love Chicago and hope other cities/states adopt that kind of laws/thinking. I am contemplating a move now............ ;)

This is the best news we've had yet. I hope other cities are going to use this for their model. :)

Who deems if the dog is dangerous? do you have to take your dog to a dog shrink??

Believe it or not (which I know you won't) but there are actually Court Appointed Experts.....and.....people who spend a lot of time studying K9 Behavior and become ACO's etc...

Oh I believe it just can't say I like it....what will happen?..Hmmm let's see the rott is suppose to be standoffish as well and not trusting of strangers is suppose to not be skittish and be bold so when a rott acts like a rott and barks at the person coming to the door to warn you then watches the new person while they are there the rott will be labled a dangerous dog and the owner will be forced to

Aloof and aggressive resulting in a bite are very different things...

Why wouldn't any responsible dog owner LOVE this law??? If your dog isn't roaming the streets and inflicts damage on an innocent person then you have nothing to worry about!

Bottom line on this= IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS pay the price!!! :) :) :) Finally, someone assessed the problem and came up with a better solution than trying to get rid of a breed itself...

Right on!

I hope enough people realize that is the point...the irresponsible owners face the consequences for their negligence rather than obliterating an entire breed and punishing all their owners, most of which are loving and responsible dog people.
