How intelligent this breed is - this made my day

In between all the bad comments ignorant people state every day about this wonderful breed, I just wanted to post another situation that showed me how intelligent and caring Rottweilers really are:

Yesterday my mother took my daughter for a swim in the swimming pool which is a few meters away from our house in the middle of the residential. She is three years old by the way. As my daughter was staying in the kids pool, my mother told her to wait for a minute as she wanted to get her favorite toy out of the car which was parked in front of the house.

She never left her out of the sight, but walked towards the car (maybe 10 meters away, at the parking lot, next to the fence). I was washing dishes at the time, watching the dogs play in the garden. When all of the sudden our Rottweiler starts barking at my mother when she walked towards the car. She was hysterical and I was very surprised why she would bark at my mother.

My mother returned quickly to get my daughter and a few minutes later I asked her what happened and she said that the Rottie was barking at her cause she left my daughter alone in the pool, kinda saying "you forgot her over there, turn around and get her". I could see how worried she was barking and jumping around like crazy, as soon as she got her, the dog calmed down.

How thoughtful!!! LOL... my mom is like "how nice, now a dog is educating me how to take better care of your daughter"...

this made my day and made me laugh a lot :-) Just wanted to share!

Re: How intelligent this breed is - this made my day

Many times a good dog will behave in a highly insightful manner. People used to say animals don't think, they just act on instinct. I knew better way back in 3rd grade! Dogs can think! They draw inferrences and make conclusions. Not necessarily complex mathematical or scientific ones...but often, very often, simple and correct ones done out of love and loyalty. And aren't we all proud when it happens?

I have a Great Dane as a child. The dog kept a perimiter of saftey, of anywhere from 50-100 yards around me as I played. No unknown person or animal ever was permitted within that limit. My old friend, Mr. Sloan, where I grew up, was always amazed by this dog. He did the same for my mom and me when we went berry picking or when I was on my swing in the orchard. Later, when we had horses, he followed me there too. This was my "Teddy" Bear, the dog I'd ( I was 6) taught to haul me uphill on sled or bike (seasonal) while my parents milked the cows.

Sabellsmom, I agree that dogs can think. Acutally I think part of training a dog/keeping them active is mentally active and as important as physically active.

We give our dog "puzzles" to work out all the time. Wrap her toy in her blanket and this prompts her to figure out a way to get it outta there.

DBF says, dogs love to be smart! I agree with him, it's obvious how stimulated they are.

Re: How intelligent this breed is - this made my day

Good dogs know when something isn't "right" as in the OP's dog teaching grams about proper child care. She's a smart dog! Be very proud of her.

Rottie's have it all: Brains and beauty. Rave got a new blue wiffle style full sized rubber football a few months ago. She insisted on taking it out when she went our for a potty break to play with it. I let her.

It came time to come in and I said "You forgot your ball. Better go get it!" She didn't. Once in the house, she began looking. "...Now, where... oh DANG! I forgot it!" Her face said it all.

I laughed and said, "I told you to go get it, silly girl." She went immediately to the back door for me to let her out again. She popped out and back in within 1.5 seconds...happy as a clam.

They THINK! And they have memory. That's a lot more than people used to give them credit for. Add to that Rottweilers were bred for, amoung other things, their intellegence, and you really have something... particularly, with a well bred dog.

Puzzles? Mine love 'em too. The real challenge is clicker Agility, tho. Rave "glows" with happiness, because she knows how smart she is. It's been a great boost to our Sable as well. She has her turn at unofficial play training in that area as well. They really turn "ON."

Every have a dog wrap itself up in a blanket? Sable's the one who likes to keep warm.

You hear many times that dog react after an action and dont think on their own - well its great to know that they do and many examples proves this theory wrong!

Sabellesmom - Memories like that make a childhood unique and will most likely never forget. I think every child that had a dog in their life will remember them with love when grown up. Its like dogs watch out for them differently and know that they are part of us
What a nice story, made me remember my grandparents dog called "Alex".. he loved me very much, and accepted each and every stupid game I involved him with. lol
