Dominance. She doesn't respect you as much as her husband. You need to practice NILIF and training every day and NEVER let her get away with humping.

My guy has just started to try humping toys and has only tried twice. He was punished and hasn't tried again since. Humping things isn't always sexual, hence this thread that I started.

As was explained, this is a dominance issue. When she's humping you , she is telling you "I own you."

It is strongly advised that you do not allow this, and further advised that you seek the help of a qualified trainer to help you with your ability to understand the dog you own. When you learn to communicate with your girl in a manner she can understand (you are sending her clear and honest information), then your relationship can easily tilt the other way. As it is given the little information you've provided, she's large and in charge.

Umm...what exactly is NILIF?

My girl and I have a really good relationship. She is very obedient and I have never had a problem with her otherwise.

PS. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Humping: Sexual or dominance?

NILIF means Nothing In Life Is Free. Basically it means you don't just do whatever for her whenever, you have to make your dog earn everything.

Sit before you pet her, wait before she eats her food, down stay before she gets to go outside, etc.

You may have a good relationship, but your dog humping you is a definite sign that she thinks that she owns you as poohbear's mom explained. She may only be listening to you and be obedient because she believes she is doing so on her terms. Dominance in a dog doesn't always mean that they are going to be aggressive or anything you know!

Oh in that case, we have been using the NILIF theory since she was 8 weeks old. As far as behavioral issues, we've never had a problem with her so this humping thing is really weird!

You might want to tighten up the NILIF exercises since they don't seem to be working. If they were, she wouldn't be humping you. She's showing you who's boss. Her, not you.

Re: Humping: Sexual or dominance?

Interesting topic and replies - quite entertaining in fact. Humping is forbotten - for Males or Females - as this is a dominance type behavioral trait outside of the breeding arena. Like Mike Trainer said - a female in standing heat is "humpable" - nothing else qualifies. So you need to redirect this unacceptable behavior into obedience, flyball, or any fun sport. DO not make a big deal of it - as you will imprint the dog - non reinforced behavior will self extinguish.
