My Rotti likes to growl...help!

She is just over 1 year old,
When she was a little bit younger it sounded like a moan (the vet said at puppy plunket that she was just vocal) but now that she is older I'm pretty sure it's a growl.
Whenever anyone pats her (and often it's her who comes up to you) or ask's her to sit she cowers away and growls. anybody would think that she has been beaten but we have had her since a pup and she definately hasn't been. any suggestions would be great.....

How much socialization has she had? A year old dog should be outgoing and happy to meet new people. Do you have her and yourself in class?

Re: My Rotti likes to growl...help!

The fact that she is cowering and growling means she is not purring.
I would get her into a class, and also when people come over have them offer her treats in a very happy voice. Then when she comes to strangers without being afraid and is happy, and is taking treats I bet she will quit the growling at them.
Have you had her ears checked or her head for sores? That would be my only other thought.
If it's painful to have someone petting her she would be hesitant.

I agree with the class idea. They are so smart and will learn quickly. Also a lot of Rott's talk. It sounds like a growl. You ned to figure out if your dog is talking or growling? How is her other behavior? A class is the best way to go.
