Just out of curiosity....

My 12 month old puppy brings me things, raw hides, bones, toys, etc, and just gives them to me out of the blue, he also does this while I am sleeping. Some mornings I would wake up with three things on me. It is cute and I love it, but I was wondering why he does this. I am the only one that he does this to. He started doing this when I started going to school on campus, so I am gone all day, I work and then go to school, three nights a week. My husband is home with the dogs all day. Also, as soon as I walk in the door from school at night, he immediately grabs a bone or a raw hide and starts chewing on it. I think it is funny, but still was wondering if anyone knew why.

Thanks,

Jenn

Re: Just out of curiosity....

Hi

My first rottie Shan used to bring me presents usually the first thing that she could pick up, and usually when I came in. She would bound up to us do a little dance around our feet drop her present at our feet and wait for some loving.
Mabel our current babe who is 6mths has started doing it aswell.

I have asked this question loads of times but nobody seems to know why they do it.

Re: Just out of curiosity....

Thank you for your response. Valek usually brings me whatever raw hide or bone is laying around, since all he destroyed all of his toys, and it is usually one that the dogs have not touched in a while.

Re: Just out of curiosity....

Jaxx had done that since puppy hood and he is going on 9 now.

He doesn't seem to care what "present" he gives to me, just as long as I take it and praise him for the beautiful gift he is happy. The gift giving is always accompanied by the famous happy dance with loads of nubby wagging

I have no idea why they do it, all I know is it makes me smile every time so it is perfectly fine with me.

It stems from their ancestors bringing food back to the den.

He is soliciting you for attention/play.

Re: Just out of curiosity....

How cute ! Nisha always brings us toys as an "invitation" to play; she never leaves them with us though.

*Please do a search on Raw Hide bones, there use is discouraged on this forum. They can easily cause blockages which need surgery ! Also, the chemicals used can cause cancer (formaldehyde)

Re: Just out of curiosity....

Rommel was notorious for this. Even the company would get dirty socks out of the laundry or anything else that was lying around as soon as they asked for a "present". He would bring something to the family if we had been out and my cousin just had to walk in the door and something was plopped in her lap.

Re: Just out of curiosity....

Gary does this to me also. As soon as I come home he grabs a toy and starts chewing on it. He did used to try to smush it all over my lap, but I hated it because I also thought (like you said poohbear's mom) that he was using the toy as a way to manipulate me into giving extra attention.

I did think it was cute but I didn't want to encourage the wrong things, so I don't allow him to bring toys up to me or my guests unless we have invited him for play.

Re: Just out of curiosity....

Better than taking things and hiding and/or chewing them in my books ....

Most people I know have had to train their pups to exhibit this type of behavior.

Re: Just out of curiosity....

I didn't mind at all with Rommel as he would bring whatever over to us and then sit with his present hanging from his mouth. He wouldn't force it on anyone. I didn't take it as a manipulation thing because if we ignored, he would drop it and walk away, occasionally looking for something else that would possibly please us.
Most definitely better than the taking and chewing things!

Re: Just out of curiosity....

We end up with the dogs bringing us stuff from when they are pups. When ours were pups they would grab things and run off and try to resourse guard the item. The wife worked with them and now if they find something they bring it too us. I lost my wallet once and sure enough, a few days later i was presented with the wallet unscathed.
