A mouthful then off

Anyone else's puppy when they get really excited must get a mouthful of something before they run around? If my dog is in the grass it'll be a mouthful of grass, if he's in the house it'll be anything on the floor (even stuff he knows is not his), or if nothing is on the floor he'll try and get the carpet. Then takes off doing his zoomies.

He has done this for months and it's really hard to get him in the act because he behaves well on lead and he always does it when I let him get riled up and run free.

I have been thinking he'll outgrow it...is that a correct assumption?

Nisha is now over a year, and still does this! I think it is so cute and spastic ; she only does it with her toys, or grass.

I love her "zoomies"; she looks like a wild woman

Probably won't outgrow it all the way. My 10 y/o still does it when he gets really excited. I encourage it though as it is pretty cute to see him hopping around in his cute old dog way with the item in his mouth. He never harms the item just carries it in his mouth and totters around happily. He also loves to do the biting grass thing when he is really really excited.

Grass or a stick outside and a toy inside. I think Max just wants me to chase him. He'll play bow, and if I make a move to chase him, he'll immediately try to grab something in his mouth and off he goes. It's too cute!

Yeah, Beau is 2 1/2 and still does it. He'll get super excited and grab anything next to him.... His toy, a sock, a mouthful of Samson... hahaha. It's like an uncontrolable reflex. I love it! Like Blisscodisco said, nothing he grabs is ever harmed, he usually just carries it around or throws it up in the air...

Yes, my pup does this too. She's 16 weeks tomorrow. It doesn't matter what it is! She even plays with her food...one kibble at a time. It sometimes takes her forever to eat. She has to grab and run, then let it go and pounce it. She doesn't do it with her food as often as she did when she first came to us.
But everything else (grass, dirt, twigs) is fair game!

Re: A mouthful then off

Why do you want him to stop? Or isn't that what you're asking? It's a coping mechanism or it's an enticement to play. Some dogs just seem to enjoy "zoomies with a stick" rather than plain ole "zoomies." And it can certainly be a coping mechanism, as it helps him have the fun and still feel in control of himself.

Gracious! How old is he? You didn't mention. Is he old enough for classes. Can you occupy his mind? Zoomies are a fact of life with most Rottie's.

If you don't like it IN the house, take the pup OUT more. Give him a rubber toy or stick and let him have at it. Do you have babies in the house? Is that why there are things on the floor that "aren't his?" If there are no babies...then what is that stuff doing laying around where he can get it?

My girls are almost 4 and almost 7. If I didn't see zoomies on a daily basis out in the fenced yard, I'd be wondering if they needed to see a vet! Have you ever seen TAMDEM ZOOMIES? That's a real trick. Two big ole buffalo's thundering around the yard carrying opposite ends of the same branch!

My neighbors will stop what they're doing and just watch, smile, joke and laugh. It's a daily block party!

Re: A mouthful then off

Thanks for all the replies, glad to hear all these dogs are having fun.

The only real problem is that he actually eats the grass when he gets it in his mouth. So if he has 10 zommie sprints that means 10 mouthfuls of grass he eats. And then later I hear him coughing and I find grass in his poop sometimes...

I don't have a fenced yard so I purposely try to get him to do them inside...I have a basement and that is his designated place to run and be as crazy as he wants and that's where he tries to pull up carpet before he takes off.

And yes they are my daughter's and neice's stuffed animals as the stuff I was referring to that are not his and once I see he is in that mood I just take him down stairs, so it's really not that big of a deal because I can get him to drop those almost right away

So that was a pretty consensus yes, good to know, thanks!

Emmy is almost 7 too and she still does it! Used to grab anything but we started directing her by saying "get a toy" and now when she gets like this we just say the "magic" words and she pounces on one of her toys or grabs one from her toy box and then she is off!! Just cracks me up!

Re: A mouthful then off

Yes, my 10 month old girl also does this. It seems to go in splirts and it's a good indicator for me that she's not getting enough exercise. I generally power walk her twice a day which adds up to about 3 miles. Some days she has more energy than others and the days when she's energized I try and give her a little more walking. I don't mind her bringing in a stick, toy, or large stone but the big clumps of grass with lots of dirt attached doesn't impress me. When she's in the house it's always a toy or her favorite, my dish towel should someone leave even a small part of it hanging over the counter. I've gone through a lot of dish towels since Tessa came. LOL

She is my second rottie to do this out of 6 that I've owned thoughout the years.

Re: A mouthful then off

I miss those zoomies ! Casar would saunter to where I would be in the house and stand there wagging his whole butt until he got my attention. I'd bend over and say "I'm gonna GET you" and off he'd go and grab something - anything and do the zoomie thing. One day I was washing his kiddie pool and had it turned over to dry and he grabbed the thing by the lip and ran off down the driveway - looked like a huge rottie frisbee ! Enjoy it - it is one of their endearing qualities !

My 4 year old does it too...I think you might have to live with it, laugh and just teach him what he is and isn't allowed to have. Every once in a while he'll grab something he shouldn't and I'll say "un uh dude" and he'll drop it and get something else. lol

Re: A mouthful then off

i own a 6mnth old rottie (1st time) and thought all his behaviours were weird and unusual...just a puppy being a puppy
but the more i read these threads the more im learning that rotts do carry alot of the same habits characteristics, personalities etc..its really just amazing me that such simple things like carrying socks, puttin head down in grass, grabbing mouthful of grass etc are all done by other rotti pups and not just my "not so weird afterall" puppy lol
dakota does the same thing..mouthful of anything..especially grass

Re: A mouthful then off

Richard the Rottweiler did this all the time. If someone came to the dorr he would scramble to find a ball or his "baby"

Cyrus doesn't do this ever, at all.
