Re: Dog Fight!

hello All,

If you are going to have a wee gathering at your house. Lock up all your dogs - as you cannot be responsible for everyone who is in attendance, 100% of the time. And if a loose dog comes to your property - your dogs are locked up - and no problem.

Sad this happened - but remember no matter how much training your dog has - it is still a dog - and dogs will do what dogs do.

Be Blessed,
Mary-Ann

Re: Dog Fight!

I have to second what brunie's mom said about how female dogs act when they are coming into heat. Here we have a intact female chihuahua that stays every week for 3 or 4 days. We all can tell when she is about to start her heat because all of a sudden she wants all the other dogs to stay away from her. Even though she is just a chihuahua she can't really hurt the other big dogs, but if you can imagine the same mind set and behavior in a big dog, like a rottweiler, then yes bad damage can be done.

Have this dog fixed and get into training to work with her and curb any dog aggression from progressing further.

(Why isn't the chihuahua fixed? It's not our dog, we babysit her. Owner for some reason just hasn't felt the need to fix her, poor thing.)

The one I purchased is 7 1/2' W x 13' L x 6'H, and it cost about $178. I added a shade tarp on the top and also put a doghouse in there as her "den". I assembled the kennel by myself, in my backyard, which IS fenced by 5'H conctrete walls. I keep her in the kennel when I am at work, and I have a padlcok on the kennel. I do this for many reasons - she's still a puppy so I am protecting my garden -LOL, plus I know she won't hurt herself, swallow something harmful or get stolen by others (which is a possibility here).
If someone is determined to steal your dog... it isn't a pad lock that is going to detere them... Just my 2 cents... can't you just crate her inside while you are at work?

It almost sounds like she was protecting you all. If the male just rushed in from out of now where?

This dog should have been spayed. Why is she still intact?
so is this always your answer to dog behavior problems ??? why should she be spayed and why is it your buisness to wonder why she isnt?

Re: Dog Fight!

I am surprised, very surprised that your bitch has not gotten pregnant with all those dogs roming in the area? Although spaying and neutering is not my soap box rant, this time I think it is NECESSARY and could be helpful to all involved.

Because it sounds like a potential BYB problem happening. The neighbor having a dog wandering around, his dog is allowed to wander around. If the dog is in heat....and numerous dogs are around...there may be more potential for a fight.

What is your answer??...you are always quick with the snotty comments....but seem to never give any answers.

Maybe you would like to encourage the OP to allow this dog to be bred? No training, BYB bred, and probably not even any papers ???
His wife also wants him to give the dog away.....giving away and intact dog so that she can produce puppies for the shelters???????

thats an awful lot of if's isnt it. you assume that because the dog was loose that it goes unsupervised while its in heat thats a pretty wide based assumtion isnt it. the bottom line is that your answer is always nueter the animal when in reality thats just an easy way out for someone that thinks it may help the animals behaviour but sound training is the key not neutering. it may sound snotty but thats all you got really is nueter and nilif. as far as the op goes i believe no one should have a dog in either the city or the country that does not have proper containment for their animal either a kennel or a fence or alays on leash when outside. regardless of which dog started what it doesnt matter it really doesnt have anything to do with the tempermant of the dog and whether its safe to keep or not. while my dogsare not dog aggressive im sure (at least the gsd) would kill any dog that came onto the property which is fenced. and as some had stated why wasnt it broke up in a hurry. well for one it was a gathering of a bunch of unexperianced people who probably would have gotten hurt breaking it up.loose animals are fair game to fall to all kind of perils.

Re: Dog Fight!

I don't know if this contributed to anything, but I've heard black labs are more prone to get into fights because they are all black and it's hard for other dogs to read their intentions.

Either way, it really is best to get her spayed so she doesn't come home with puppies if you're going to keep letting her roam around unsupervised. Not that I'd advise that since she seems to be dog aggressive now

Re: Dog Fight!

why does everyone think that just because the individual has an intact dog that its destined to turn into a backyard breeding story or that the dog is not supervised while its in heat?? if that were the case the dog would have had a litter long ago

Would pulling on both dogs back legs cause the dog that is biting to tear the skin even more.. Generally a dog that is that mad isnt going to let go. I always keep a bucket of water or a hose with a spray nossle around, Just in case! Anything that will set there mind off of what is happening. Just my opinion though.

Re: Dog Fight!

a few possible solutions:
- ask landlord permission if you can put up a temporary fence that you can take down if/when you move
-always keep your dog with you and supervise her when she must go out, as well, you will be taking her on alot of long walks this way
-look for another place to live with fenced facilities that will keep your dog safe, and if someone else's animal gets in, oh well, for them. i do not believe that you should have had to pay the vet bills at all. it does not matter who's animal comes in, why did the landlord not keep his at home! just because he is a landlord or because he always lets his dog run at large. i have no respect for that either.
-i have 4 rottees running my huge yards, of course i am on my own acreage, but my neighbours have 2 dogs that come right up to my chain linked fences and torment my dogs. oh well, if they get in. it is the neighbours responsiblilty to keep their dogs confined, just as i have to. i firmly believe that if you have any type of pet, the proper facilities should be there in order to keep them safe from other animals, and especially other people who let their animals run at large. if your dog stays home and is in her own yard, but the yard is not fenced, you are looking at problems for sure anyway. it is your total responsibility to make sure that your animals are safe and protected. that gives you all the leverage you need. i always protect my dogs, always.
-i would not take responsibility for some one else's ignorance or irresponsibility for their own pets.
-your dog was just protecting her own territory. it is just too bad you did not take the appropriate precautions to setting up a safe temporary fence for your own pet. without your own well fenced protective yard for your dog, you are not taking full responsibility for your own pet and best friend. we have had rottees in our family for about 100 years and i have really not known any other breed except for bull mastiffs.
-please for your pets sake and yours, fence your yard to keep pets in and outsiders out!!!!

Re: Dog Fight!

OMG! You people have no emotions for anyone. I am sorry I came here and asked for your advice. All you do is point fingures and tell people they dont know how to raised a dog. My dog is very well behaved, listens to whatever I say. She is not spayed and also has NEVER had a litter. As for papers, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THEM? What if she didnt have papers? Would that make less of a dog? We had a 1/2 rott 1/2 dob yrs ago. Perfect dog..Yet you prob think she was just a mutt. I said we where having a get to gether and I had the dogs out. Did you ready that? You act like I wasnt home or something. My dog was never out side without me. If we are out and I run in to get a drink or anything she follows me in. And as far as your attitude about me leaving? I didnt check for what, 24 hrs and you say that? Thats fine. Anyways Im sorry I asked for you help. Have a nice day!
