Is your Rottie always hot?

Here's another question for the masses

Max is always hot. He much prefers the ceramic tile or hardwood floor to his bed, or the couch. I can get him up on the couch with me for about 5 mins and then he goes and lies down on the floor to be nice and cool. He doesn't even sleep much on his bed since we have a stone fireplace and he'll spend countless hours sleeping with most of his body touching it.

It's been really nice and sunny here and I'll go outside with him and as soon as he relieves himself, off to the shade he goes.

I've read many posts about your rotties keeping your feet warm so is this something they outgrow? I know kids have a much higher body temp than adults, is this true for puppies too?

He once locked himself in the ensuite bathroom sometime overnight because the carpet was too hot for him I have rigged up a high-tech "bungee" system (aka hair elastic), so he won't have to worry about getting the door closed on him again!

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

I like your hi-tech design! I have one who prefers tile to carpeting, when it's warm. The other one? F'get about it! She's purely a couch potato. She'll even thieve a blanket from ya!

Outside in summer? If there's a breeze it doesn't matter. But on a hot sunny day, yeah. They like shade, too!

Kids may "seem" warmer or act warmer than us because they move around more. But normal kids run 98.6, just like we do.

Here in spain all the floors are tiled with multiple rugs scattered all over the place so lottie tends to dos about on the floor in the day (never in the same place for more than half hour or so), I think its because she gets hot. she never lies in the sun and alway sleeps in her bed by ours at night (she likes to be with us).

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

It is pretty warm year round here. Nisha is always hot; we have stained concrete floors which she lays on to cool off. I only take her to areas (parks) with water for exercise in fear of a heat stroke. She pants a lot; but when the a/c is on she relaxes and hangs out with us on the couch....so, I guess my dog needs the a/c more than me .

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

I don't know about the feet part, I know rotties are very sensitive about having their feet touched, thus hating nail clipping time (which is why they always advise getting your puppy used to that from day 1 so they are accustomed to it)...

Rotties don't do well in the heat, so I always walk after the sun goes down in the summer time, and keep the walks shorter, sometimes just down to the end of the street and back (I have an older girl)

I've found if you don't have a big pool already, just getting them a plastic kiddie pool is a fun time for them, and a great way to cool off after walks, or just play around in.

I've actually seen some people put a doggie type sham on the dogs, when it is super hot, and its really effective at keeping them cool.

Good for you rigging the bathroom door. A friend has a big doofus of a male Rottie that gets himself stuck in the bathroom regularly.

I actually have a dog "coat" for Missy for the summer... it's made like one of those "chilly neck" things, that you soak in cold water beforehand. We definitely do "hot" here... can't wait to try it. (bought it in December -- didn't need it then!)

Our ensuite is small, so once he stretches out, he pretty much takes up the length of the floor from the tub to just behind the open door. When he turns over onto his back, the door swings shut. LOL

You'll have to write a review of the chilly neck thing I saw them at the pet store and was wondering if they worked.

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

My guys are always hot too!! I've seen everything from them stretching out on the ceramic tile....to heading down to lie on the lino in the basement. My one girl has actually convinced me (on hot days~~which we don't get too too many of) to actually turn on the A/C for her....and she will stretch out in front of one of the vents and shortly thereafter snoring.....I've always somewhat worried about her possibly freezing off something doing this but its never happened yet

I get reports from puppy homes that it appears to be genetic....I've heard of every way imaginable to find a new spot to keep cool. We have one boy from the last litter who likes to climb into the bathtub to keep extra cold

Considering that we just received 18" of snow here over the past 3 days.....my guys are LOVING it....dive bombing their heads and half their bodies into snow banks and drifts.

I don't know what we would do if we lived in a warmer climate....I guess they would acclimate however my guys don't do well with heat!!

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

Your "hot dog" sounds so much like Taser! He has also accidently locked himself in the ensuite bathroom looking for a cool place. He has never liked any blankets or beds in his kennel. We look like mean parents when people see only tin floor in there! He takes it upon himself to take the throw carpets away from the outside doors so he can lie there and catch the draft on the bare floor. What on earth is he going to do when it gets above +12? *sigh*

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

Yes yes a thousand times yes. In the winter at night I turn the heat down to 60 and crack my bedroom window cause Jaxx is HOT

We sleep under 50 pounds of blankets and a down comforter but the dog is comfy !!

His favorite place in the summer is the tiles by the door, nice and cool. He switches spots now and then when one spot warms up too much. He LOVES his kiddy pool and we have spent countless hours playing with the hose and having water fights. He also can't wait to "help" me water the garden. He sees the hose unroll and assumes the water fight position behind the oak tree and waits for me to sneak around and squirt his butt....then the game is on.

I have also caught him sleeping in the tub in the guest bath on occasion since it's lower and easy for him to get in and out

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

Well check this out, right now since the weather is getting warmer my Zeke also loves to lay on the breeze way tile floor and when out doors loves the shade. He does not like any kind of clothing or blanket in his crate as he will literally drag them out but when I would fire up the kerosene heater in the winter he would lay right in front of it for quite a while. I just cant figure this out...

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

Yep!

We have hardwood and tile floors. Our dogs LOVE them!

Our 12 week old rottie girl lies directly on the AC vent. When one side cools off enough, she rolls over and chills the other side!

She also splashes the water out of her bowl and lies in the puddle on the floor.

This isn't true.

Normal temp for a dog runs 100 to 102.5 degrees F.

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

Lola is always hot and lies on the marble floors all spring and summer. If she goes for a walk too early in the day, she will pant for hours. We got her a giant pool and steps to get in. She will get in and bark for some one to get in with her. She jumps out when finished. The pool is 15ft by 3ft deep. She would sleep in there if she didn't sink to the bottom.
There is a lobster farm not far from my house . Many years ago the owners had a St Bernard. The dog would not come out of the freezer. He napped there all summer on a giant block of ice. When he did come out to eat or potty, his fur was covered in ice. His drool was frozen on either side of his mouth. People would line up just to see him come out of the freezer. The owners said he would bark from the second they opened till some one let him in the freezer. He was one HOT doggie.

Re: Is your Rottie always hot?

Harley loves to lie down on the tile floor in our bathroom. The AC vent then blows on his back end....seems to enjoy that!!!
