Pig noise?

I was cutting my 14 month olds nail tonight and had him on his back. He was not a happy camper, and was making a weird nosie like he was snoring or even oinking. Does anyone know what this means?

Re: Pig noise?

He was probably stressing out, being on his back made him even MORE stressed. He was probably just trying to breathe really fast; since he was upside down this was more difficult...therefore the "snorting" noise came about.

Try laying him on his side next time; it is a less threatening position.

Re: Pig noise?

Our Zooey does this on a low level when she interacts with others on just about any level. It ramps up and gets louder when she's excited and stressed either in a good way or bad.

Re: Pig noise?

Our dogs often pig snort when they are happy, mostly using the sound as sort of a "thank you" or "yum" sound when they get a bit of home baked bread.

Reverse sneeze is what I thought too. Bear used to do this quite a bit and happened to do it while we were at the vet's office one day and that's what they said it was. It almost sounds like they are gasping for air and snorting like a pig at the same time.

Re: Pig noise?

Lex reverse sneezed when she was fighting kennel cough. It sounds like an UNcontrollable hyperventilation.
Not a normal grunt or snortle that she does on her OWN accord.

There's a huge difference between the two. Or three..or four...
If she's doing this on her own she's talking, IMHO. Maybe try a different approach for the nails if it bothers you.

If she's fighting a cold or runny nose it MAY be running down the throat as she lays on her back or side, causing a reverse sneeze but I think you'd have heard it before the nail trim. She may be just telling you all about it and how horrible it is, having a nail trimmed, who knows.
Rotts are talkers...there's a pit we know that snortles when he knows you're talkin about him...it all depends!

Only you know your pup, good luck!

Re: Pig noise?

Well, "on his back" he's vulnerable and demeaned. It is a position of least respect, which you actually should NOT need to cut or dremel his nails.

Having one's nails done is stressful enough without adding being on his back. This is his response to the stress! I'm in agreement. He could even be hyperventillating. Can you try him on his side, instead? It might not disappear, but should lessen, as he calms himself.

When I first read the title of the thread I thought it would be about the little pig grunts my Cocker makes when he's happy or eating something yummy! Oh well...that's what I get for jumping to a conclusion!

Re: Pig noise?

I cut Max's front nails while he's sitting and then do the back ones while he's lying down on his side.

I also thought this thread was about cute piggy snorting! Max will snort when he's licking himself or when he's rubbing against my leg like a cat. I joke sometimes that I didn't end up with a Rottweiler, but a cat, pig or cow!

These are Chili's new favorite positions for nail grinding, too. She always flops down on her side (voluntarily, without me even asking) when it's time to start on those nails, but isn't quite comfortable enough to stay down while I'm grinding the fronts....so she sits for those and then lays down again for the rear.
