Advice on adding another dog to home Hi all! It has been a while since I have posted here on RDN. Tank is doing awesome. He has completed his training and working with a behaviorist quite some time ago. Although it is a daily routine of training I am glad that I stuck with him. An opportunity has come my way and I would like advice from exp. Rott owners. As I consider myself still somewhat of a novice owner. I have a chance to bring another Rott into my home. This puppy is in a crate for up to 12 hours a day. She is then left outside to roam on her own. The owner had started a new job that does not allow her to be a good dog owner. She stated she just doesn't have the time as she has a young son. This dog is UTD on shots, neg heartworm, hips and elbows are good etc. The only thing that I would need to do it have her neutered when age appropriate. This is my question. Now it may be blantantly obvious what the answer is to you. Tank does not like other dogs. However, he has no problem with cats. With this dog being so young ( wt. is approx 23lbs) would there be an issue with the two co-habitating? Or being she is a female and young Tank could get used to this. Now I know that is she was brought into our home she would be on a leash at all times, they would be feed at different times and at different places in the house. She would also be crated. Tank is not crated. We use my room as his den. This puppy needs training all the way around. She is not even potty trained. Please give honest non-judgemental answers. Thanks

Re: Advice on adding another dog to home for one the dog unless it 2 and have been xrayed no one has a clue about the hips or health . if tank has dog aggression issues and seeing how he is a work in progress and will require non stop training i certainly wouldnt add another dog that sounds as if it has had little socialization or training he may very well with it being a female accept the dog but with a dog having known issues and a dog that you dont know what issues it has one or the other will probably suffer and you certainly dont want him to back peddle any. if he likes cats get a cat.

Re: Advice on adding another dog to home I know how tempting it can be as an animal lover to want to take in a cat or dog that is in need of a good forever home. Honestly, I would not take in this puppy due to reading the past posts about how you obtained Tank and the amount of work that is required in managing him. Please keep in mind that he is a big project and can be managed as I see the progress you're making with him, but will not be cured. It wasn't that long ago that you were experiencing issues with him (Tank) and you wouldn't want all the hard work you've been doing to end up back at square one. I would advise the owner of this dog to surrender it to the Michigan Rottweiler Rescue.

Re: Advice on adding another dog to home That is what I was asking in a round about way. I wasn't sure how to word it. Would adding another dog unravel all the work/progress Tank has made? He is such an awesome dog that I do not want that to happen.

Re: Advice on adding another dog to home I think it's too early for you to consider getting another dog. You had issues with Tank not too long ago and I'm happy that things are turning around for you two. However, I really don't think it's a good idea yet to add to the family. Especially if he has dog aggression issues, you need to make sure he is reliably trained (I doubt that he is at this point since his issues were rather recent) before adding in another dog. JMO.

Your advice is always welcomed and enjoyed. I do not want him to back peddle for sure. |

![]() Why don't you look up the number for your local Rottweiler Rescue? A puppy will be adopted very quickly in well screened, experienced homes. Often a waiting list of pre-approved people are waiting for a rescue puppy. This way the puppy will go into a deserving home...and you have no guilt. ![]() Gina
