Well done. How did you do it? And how old is Riggs?

Re: I am so proud...

That is wonderful, makes things so much easier!

I must brag on my DH though, he taught our three cats to ring the bell when they needed to go out - I thought that was pretty darn cool!

(just FYI, this was before we realized the harm that outdoor cats can do and the harm they can come to - my current cat is an indoor only cat!)

Re: I am so proud...

Wonderful !!! Congratulations !!! We did the same with Mango.... what a lifesaver for both us and the dog !!!

Riggersmum, I would enjoy hearing about how you taught yours....
We simply hung a small string of bells on the door (very low) when we picked up Mango at 8 weeks old. Didn't take her long to figure it out.... perhaps she was just being mouthy and testing them, but she alway got a treat and a trip outside to play/pee/poo every time she rang them.

Re: I am so proud...

Our house would sound like a constant barrage of bells if I put them up. Heiko our boy is constantly at the door tapping the window to go outside. It can be annoying, but it's also great because he tells us when he needs to go potty.

Good job and congrats.

Re: I am so proud...

That's super! Has Riggs learned to "lie" yet? Zoe will ring her bell 5 minutes after she's had a totally productive trip to the yard if she hears the little yappers next door outside. She doesn't just ring it, she beats the heck out of it. LOL Interesting thing, we also have a 5 year old DoberGal, and she has begun to ring the bell when she wants out.

I've read on the Chatham-Kent OSPCA's site that if you hang up a bell at the door and ring it each time you let the dog out eventually he'she will ring it when they want out.

Re: I am so proud...

Riggs is almost 7 months old. All I did to teach him, was hung a bell on the door knob and then every time I took him out I would ring the bell. It took him a pretty long time to catch on, but now he is ringing it himself whenever he needs to go out.

He 'lies' sometimes, like when he just wants to go out to play. Mostly my Lab does the lying though...
