Dog Nearly Bites Friend - Urgent Advice Needed

Hello,

So, I've been a member to this forum for quite some time. I've shared my past experiences, my past situations, and I've asked for advice. And once again, I'm here with a little ultimatum to consider.

It starts like this. Today, I had a friend fly in to stay with me for 10 days. Now, I know and knew it would be a situation. Reason is, I just recently moved to the area, and I don't know too many people here, so I haven't had the opportunity to have to may people over, really, none at all since I've had my dog.

A little information about him, it's a male, 14 months old, still intact.

Anyways, so, my plan to help ease the situation was that I had my friend stay outside when we pulled up to my house, and I was going to bring Rosco out to meet him, on neutral grounds.

I brought him out, he saw my friend, and I made him sit until he was calm. Once he sat, and was calm, I gave him the go ahead to walk up to my friend, and sniff him out.

I had given my friend a handful of treats to give Rosco, just to help associate the treats with my friend and Rosco.

When Rosco walked up, smelled him, my friend told him to sit, and attempted to give him the treat, and Rosco lunged at him, with a deep bark, and pretty much tried to bite him.

Afterwards, we all went for a walk around my complex to ease the tension and attempt to get Rosco more comfortable with my friend. During that walk, Rosco walked along fine, still not sure who my friend was, but continued walking with out tension. About half way through the walk, we tried to have him give him a treat again. This time, Rosco walked up to him, sat, took the treat, and then spit it out and lunged at him again.

So we continued walking back to my home. Went back inside, and put Rosco in his crate, and he began to bark, and whine.

He continues to stay in the crate, I am going to avoid there contact all together.

I've made phone calls to the best trainer in Florida, who has over 50 years of experience, and has trained over 40,000 Rottweilers, German Shephards and Dobermans. I am awating his call, and will most likely be taking him down to his school to make an assessment.

I am waiting for his call, and we will see from there.

I thought I would share this, and get other peoples views on what to do, and how to handle it. Because at this point, I'm pretty upset and dissapointed.

Thanks.

Wow....sounds like you have quite the situation going on here! I read some of your previous posts and you've had issues with this dog and aggression for many months now, haven't you? Have you had a trainer to see him since you posted when he was 8 months old? What did the trainer say?

I haven't, I've have consultations over the phone many times. But I've never had it directly assessed. It's just a hard siatuation, because I'm consdering putting him down. I'm beginning to think other options here.

Explain to me why you're considering putting him down, when you haven't done the work needed to get him/YOU trained properly!?! You were posting about this SIX MONTHS AGO and still haven't actually done more than TALK to a trainer?! May I inquire as to why?

It's a hard situation because YOU have done nothing but DREAM about helping your dog and have done NOTHING to actually help him in any concrete way. You are NOT the right home for this dog, and it's become quite apparent you never were. If you need to put him down to prevent injury to someone, then so be it. The NOTHING you have done so far certainly didn't fix anything.

The advice is exactly the same as it was the last time you asked about this: this dog needed professional help when you first asked about it, now the problem has been allowed to become worse. I'm sorry people are being hard on you, but you knew this was a problem, you knew what needed to be done about it, and I simply can't believe that you're actually surprised that it has come to this.

Alice's Mommy and Moondog,
Well said!!
Some people should not own this breed as they do not have the commitment or desire to do whats right by the dog----then we hear its " just a hard situation" ---Yeah, on the dog!!!

Rehome him with someone who is familiar with Rottweilers and willing to work with him---I am so tired of people failing these dogs and then putting them down---it's a sin.

Glad your friend didn't get bit----would have been just another negative statistic for our breed.

Re: Dog Nearly Bites Friend - Urgent Advice Needed

Well, the thing is, I spoke to my trainer and told him briefly about my dogs background, where he came from, incidents that happened in the past, and he feels that it's genetics, and that you can't really change genetics.

See, I just don't know if it is too late for help. I mean, even if I send him out to this boot camp facility, who knows how he will act when he gets back.

Sure, he will get more socialazation but at the same time, I just don't know if it is worth it.

My ideal scenario would be for someone to come to my home and work with him. But the trainers I want to work with, rarely come to homes, and if so, it would cost an arm and a leg.

All I do know, is that the situation needs to be addressed now. No more time is left.

In my heart, I truly feel something can be worked on, but I don't know if I will ever be able to trust him around other people, especiallly inside my home.

You failed him, just re-home him and go on.
Just make sure it is with someone that is experienced with Rotts and they are willing to give this boy the chance YOU should have.

It's all IMAGINARY until someone actually OBSERVES THE DOG, WORKS WITH THE DOG, and WORKS WITH YOU and the dog TOGETHER!

He will act just the same as he did before he left, because you will act just the same as YOU did before he left.

This is your MO in a nutshell...."Gee, maybe this, maybe that...Gee, maybe the other thing..."

For crying out loud, where in the hell have you BEEN while this dog was growing up into a tyrant? This situation needed to be addressed a YEAR AGO. Are you really this dense? Nevermind, no need to answer that.

Re: Dog Nearly Bites Friend - Urgent Advice Needed

Please consider re-homing him with a responsible owner or finding a rescue that can properly make an assessment of whether he can be trained or needs to be put down first. I know you are concerned about his behavior around other people, but if he has never had proper training then how do you know if this is something that can't be fixed. That is certainly not fair to the dog. At least, give him a chance first....please!!

Since you say you've only done consultations over the phone, you obviously did not get the help Amanda offered. Stop failing this dog and get him some real, hands-on help now. Or, take sophie's mom up on her offer.

Yeah, and not because of Amanda. How many of us would jump through hoops to have an opportunity to work with the likes of Amanda? And what does this guy do? Gee, he DROPS THE BALL....after it has been placed carefully in his arms. Lord!
