| Hi all, Well Hondo is growing up! Hondo is lifting his leg now when he needs to pee. I couldn't believe it as he has always squatted. Also, he will pee in many different spots when he goes outside. What is that all about?? I have always had females and they just squat and came back inside. He has to sniff and lift, sniff some more, lift! Not bad on the sunny days but when it's raining, argh! He just turned 7 months and he is the best! Any insight for me? Thanks in advance! |

| Re: Pees in many spots at once outside?? He's marking. Male dogs do this. Edited to say that not just males do this as Shelby marks our yard as well. You can curb the behavior by correcting him when he's about to cock that leg up...I don't mind when Hudson marks around our yard, but he is not allowed to mark all over the place when we are on walks etc. Last edited by Shelby427; 03-12-2008 at 04:07 PM. |

| Re: Pees in many spots at once outside?? Indeed Zakk was exactly the same until a similar age... His hormones are kicking in and he's basically marking his territory. If this is when he is walking I would try ang get him out of the habit by giving corrections, only let him stop to pee once during your walk and give him a command when he does and he'll then learn to pee on command and probably empty all in one go, you are the leader of the walk and he should be getting your permission before stopping for anything (if he doesn't empty he'll then have to cross his legs until you next give him permission or let him out in your yard.) He should be able to do a 30-45 minute walk with only 1 pee (after all how long is he home alone in the day with time to practice holding on. |

| Neutering will usually stop the marking...if the habit is not left too long. Once the testosterone is out of the system...the marking will often stop, or slow way down. Just do not allow him to mark....it's called training. Gina

| Re: Pees in many spots at once outside?? I agree with Gina, once they are neutered it slows right down, not immediately, but it does. They dont stop at EVERY tree or EVERY powerpole They will still stop for a sniff, but not necessarily to cock the leg and mark their territory all the time. With Magnum, i used to play with him inside before walks, take him out to do his business and THEN take him for a walk, that way i knew his bladder was empty and he was just marking. It was a lot easier (and no guilt on my part thinking i am making him hold his bladder) to stop him from marking by correcting him every time he went to cock his leg. I am the opposite to you, I've always had males, this is my first female. Trina

| Re: Pees in many spots at once outside?? Sam used to mark our backyard and at 18 months I got him neutered. He is now back to squatting and I haven't seen him lift his leg in 4 months. He will be two years old in April. |

| Re: Pees in many spots at once outside?? Cash is almost 9 months and he still doesnt lift his leg, Gypsy marks but not as much now since she was fixed, my issue is Gypsy takes forever to poop she has to have that perfect spot, she is now going in one certain spot by the house so thats less mess I have to go looking for, but she is now giving me a hard time, so she is still in her crate this morning because she refuses to poop and Im not having "cow pie poop" in the basement when she is down there
