Following the quoted advice will only bring trouble for you and your dog.Don't you ever forget this:if you beat your dog as suggested by Leige,he will turn against you one day or another(when you have a weaker moment)They never forget .Interaction with your dog is based on trust and respect.Follow the quoted advice and you will loose both.
I dont recall saying that I beat me dog, maybe I should have said it in a different way. A dog needs to understand immediately that lifting his leg to pee on someone is unexceptable behavior. A good firm slap on the head is not beating, it is called getting attention. My dog has never peed on me nor have I ever hit him but if this would ever happen he would get a good firm slap.Better for him to know right from wrong now instead of being patient and having your dog pee on you time and time again until he learns not too.

Ok, stop suggesting to others to slap their dogs. Regardless of what you want to call it, slapping, hitting, bullying is not the way to deal with dogs. If you want to correct the behavior, get a leash and collar on the dog and give a good, firm, strong correction. No need to hit or slap the dog.

A dog can understand it immediately if you do it the right way. Slapping a dog is NOT the right way. You can get attention other ways as well, slapping a dog is not a good way to get attention. I feel bad for your dogs in fear that if they do something wrong, that you will SLAP them.

This is for Leige and any of those that think Leige is giving sound advise. Please read and learn. It's very basic, thus the title.

Don't even have to ask: I have given one dog one helluva a left uppercut once. He was an adult, and we were having a difficult time with learned dog aggression. He believed me after that. There is NO room to slap, smack, or punch a SIX MONTH OLD PUPPY.

As I said, I'm a firm believer in corrections.

Respect is one thing to gain, making a dog distrustful of his owner/handler/master is not an intelligent thing to do. Young dogs this age are imprinted VERY easily, and a stern leash correction which is well timed would certainly suffice.

If one gives an adequate correction which is well timed, then there shouldn't really be a need for anything other than gentle reminders afterwards.

Honesty is the best policy. I don't condone nagging, either. I believe in "Say what you mean, mean what you say", as the dog offers me the same courtesy.

The OP in this particular thread needs hands on help. Period. This is why the suggestion of finding a behaviorist/trainer was made. This person is in dire need of understanding the basics of dog body language (or he could stop the dog from lifting leg on him before it happens), both classical and operant conditioning techniques, and I'd venture to say, a LOT of training, otherwise this relationship will stay unequal, and the dog's behavior will intensify.

Suggesting that a novice solve this issue by slapping this young dog into last week is not acceptable. Suggesting to this novice owner the proper avenues to take is.

My 2 cents.

Leige, you may not have said that you "beat" your dog, but knocking the living s**t out of him sounds pretty similar to "beating"

Maybe you should try other ways of getting a dogs "attention" besides physically; like saying "ah-ah...NO"???

Since you "don't recall", let's refresh your recollection.

Sounds like beating to me. And, then you start backpedaling, saying a "very hard slap" is the answer:

And in the post I quoted first, you go on to say that you never have slapped your dog, but you are sure that's the way to go to discipline the OP's dog. Sorry, have a hard time believing you've never used a method you are so sure is right. Like the "severe reprimand" you gave him for "stealing" your steak? (And I'm not trying to get off topic here, just challenging the bad advice given here about discipline)

Okay Leige, I read it completely...it still sounds pretty bad . I see nothing in your post that makes this sentence seem less awful.

I wont get defensive JoJo but I just bet most of you on here at one time or another have hit your dog at one time or another. At least I can say Poohbearsmom is honest...

Re: My Rott is peeing on me!

Hitting your dog b/c he pees on you, because you haven't taught him otherwise is unacceptable. He should hit himself for not correcting the dog earlier. Training mistakes (especially in this case) are the owners fault, the dog is not to blame.

The best thing for the OP to do, would be hire a trainer, and to take the advice of everyone else on this thread. This should be a simple fix; their is no need to hit a dog when a simple verbal correction will work just fine.

It might have happened out of frustration, or whatever, but do you see Poohbearsmom telling others to do that? I didn't see it. What she did say though is this:

"There is NO room to slap, smack, or punch a SIX MONTH OLD PUPPY."

"and a stern leash correction which is well timed would certainly suffice."

Even if it HAD happened to some members, it's by NO MEANS the answer, and I'm sure those members have subsided from SLAPPING or HITTING their dogs.

Re: My Rott is peeing on me!

OK... HIT A DOG. This op is talking about a 6 mo old ?? Have I ever hit a young pup ? No way.

In a moment of My anger ( a stressful time after a dog bite situation).I did react by hitting the dog on his way to kennel him. I still regert that day.

The op has received many many good suggestions for handling the situation WITHOUT HITTING A PUP.
