Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

My husband came home from work one day and got his feelings hurt because both my Rottie pups didn't come to greet him at the door that day as usual, because their noses were deep into their food bowls. The funny thing is that my kittens were eating as well in another room and they ran to greet him as soon as they heard the door. LOL! (He has always been a dog person, stating how cats care only about food and the house ,while dogs would fly to the moon for you).To make things only worse he called them but to no avail. He was just like an invisible man while they were in dog food heaven.
He started saying "how can man's best friend do this to me? After a full day of work to afford to feed them this is what I get in recognition? " I found the event funny and tried to make him feel better by telling him, perhaps this is a puppy thing? It was even funnier that once they were down to the last crumb they came wagging to him as like saying:"Our tummies are full now,so we are getting back to you, leave us a message next time you come home and we are eating"!
They could not be excessively hungry as they are fed 3 times a day plus treats. So I am checking here to know if your dog greets you or you think they would if they were eating.

That would completely depend on how hungry she was at the time, LOL. It's all relative.

Yes Kane will greet me anytime eating or not. My mom had gave him some raw chicken. Then I walked in the house and he stopped eating to greet me. He is a odd dog thought so it may just be him lol.

My blue heeler (Dice) and rott (Jaycee) will both stop eating to greet me, my min schnauzer, no way...Dice and Jaycee also will stop at least one time while they are eating to come and check on me, then go back to eating...

Yes, Buddy will drop anything if I come home. If I've been in the house, he'll look at me if I come into the kitchen and go back to eating although he'll come to me if called.

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

While I don't doubt my boy's affection for me - I pale in comparison to a chicken back, sardine, or lamb neck. I have never had a more food driven dog in my life than this boy...and believe me he's not underfed!

His obedience is at a high enough level now that I could call him off his food if I needed to but why would I? I would hate to be called off a meal I was so obviously enjoying

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

Oh, oh, I guess my hubby will get a heartbreak! Wow, I wonder if there is a way to teach them to be less interested in food.... Every time they sit and stay and I put the food bowl down and say "go" they eat like if they haven't eaten for a week! Perhaps it's because they are two and they worry if they would leave the food bowl the other will steal its food? I am thinking towards this direction now...

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

You will find that high food drive is a huge help in training...when you have a dog that has high food drive it is very easy to keep him focused in a class. I personally wouldn't discourage it.

As for feeding two - I have four dogs and all of them eat seperate - out of sight of each other. I think feeding time should be completely unstressful for a dog, there shouldn't be the worry for competition. That being said - my highest food drive dog launches into every meal like he hasn't seen food for weeks even though he is on a very regular feeding schedule just like the rest of them. He has great gusto for life and food is just a part of that.

Tell hubby not to worry, full bellies are just in as much need as a belly rub as empty ones!

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

LOL! I agree, training has been pretty easy when they know there are treats coming!
I did keep them separated during meal time at first because the male would try to steal food from the female. However, I have managed pretty easily from stopping him from doing so and now when he is done he will leave her alone, go to drink and wait in a corner till she is done and then look if she has left some crumbs for him.

There is not much competition over the food however, it looks like in dog language if one dog leaves the food bowl it is a signal for the other dog that he is done, so perhaps this is ultimately why they will not come to greet! Just my thought!

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

Yes, Neyla will greet me at the door with a bow. Doesn't matter if she's eating, or how hungry she is, she will stop eating, bow to me, then run and get her Cuz ball and come over to play. Not to be mean, but I ignore her because with her it becomes a bad habit of play first and eat later (especially when it comes to my kids). My rule, 15 minutes to get your butt in gear and eat. Otherwise she will have to wait until next meal time. If I don't do this, then in the morning when things are hectic getting the kids breakfast and out the door for school and her fed, we would never get out the door and I would never make it to work.

My cats are a different story, they will only stop eating if they think they can con you into getting them something better to eat such as Mr. Whiskas Temptation Treats (also known to me as kitty crack LOL).

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

Shelby will come around the corner to see who comes home, but she'll go right back and finish eating. Hudson won't remove his face from the bowl, the house could be falling down or on fire and he wouldn't move from his bowl.

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

I guess I have two just as your Hudson, I have dropped accidentally a whole box full of heavy stuff one day, while they were eating and they didn't even startle! The good thing is my floor is sparkling clean lately, if a few crumbs of bread fall off the table I have my two "merry maids" come to rescue later on.OH, I think I can toss away my vacuum now. Lol!

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

when they are given the "ok" to go to their food bowl, the earth could open, fire could rain from the sky, and the heavens rent and my dogs would not stop eating. it takes them probably a mere minute to eat their meal.

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

Zumi, my rescue mutt also takes a mere minute to finish her meal. Infact she used to eat so quickly that I had to train her to eat slower...pretty sad I think but she loves food and that has really helped with her training.

Gary on the other hand loves his dog food if he is hungry. He isn't much a morning eater and usually nibbles on his food, but come dinner time he eats the whole meal in one sitting. He is always eager for treats, but his normal kibble he isn't always 100% focused on.

With that being said, Zumi will not greet anyone if she is eating. She will glance out of the corner of her eye (with head still in the bowl) and give you a nice tail wag. I can call her off of her food though if I need to. Gary will come running to you if it is breakfast time and hang out as long as you will pet him. During his dinner he will come say hi then go back to his food. Weird pups!

Re: Will your rottie greet you if he/she is eating?

Oz is always happy enough to come and greet people, be he eating, snoozing, whatever. it really is an odd change from living with labs. (true stomachs on feet, them.)

about the only time he won't come to greet you is if it's past his bedtime (10:30pm) and he's snoozing on a chair. then you get this odd look - seems to say "yeah, i love you, ok? now piss off so i can sleep some, i'll be cuddly later..." still very happy to see you, but can't be bothered getting up to say hi.
