Adult dog dumping inside the house!! Hi, new here :) I have no idea what's wrong with my dog. He's a rescue dog, we have had him since he was 7 and now he's 10. When we had to go away for a few days a few months ago, he went into a kennels with our other rotty. On return we found out that he'd been peeing all over his bed. For the next week after getting him back he kept on peeing and pooing inside the house and on his bed! He seemed to get over it and stopped. However this strange behaviour has returned badly with him dumping in the house every other day. I can't understand this at all!!! There's access to the garden etc it isn't like he's trapped inside. He won't even let people know he needs to go outside when the door's shut. He's old enough not to do this, he's always been such a lovely dog and I can't think of any reason for it. We've mentioned this to the vet but no answers. Please help!! Any ideas at all??? The only thing I can think of is that it may be linked to abadonment issues. The only thing making me think this is that he first had this problem after we left him in the kennels for a few days, so surely us leaving him was the trigger? In the first few months of owning him he hurt himself and needed to go to the vet's and he needed to stay overnight. Unfortunately he got all worked up because we weren't there and howled the place down - he got so bad the vets had to ring us to fetch him. I'm confused :( and really don't know what to do. I don't even know what got him to stop doing it the first time round.

| Being that he is 10 years old, I would suspect a health problem. Have your vet check him out, and take in a fecal sample also. He may have worms? Have a senior wellness examine done on him (blood and urine)...so that you know that his organs are working properly. For now, after he eats, or when you know that he is going to have a poop take him for a walk or go out to the garden with him and make sure he poops outside. He may also be getting mixed up...sometimes in their old age they get a bit confused. ![]() Have you changed his diet? or started adding anything else to his food? Is he pooping in the same spot in the house? Clean up the area with a special pet type of enzyme cleaner...and don't let him have access to the spot again. Gina

Re: Adult dog dumping inside the house!! I agree with BM on this one. The dog likely has a health issue. When my Bessie (at age 11) started losing control over her potty organs, it was a bad sign. Get him to the vet and I'll cross my fingers for you. Either way you should know what's up in order to deal with the problem appropriately.

Re: Adult dog dumping inside the house!! Unfortunately he has already been to the vet and was cleared of any issues, so it must be something else. His diet hasn't changed. He will dump in random places in the house. We're taking it in turns to put him outside about an hour after every meal now in the hope he'll get the idea :(

Re: Adult dog dumping inside the house!! Definitely have a vet checkup first to make sure your dog doesnt have any health problems. If your dog is going in the same spot, he might be smelling it and think its okay to go back and do it again like Brunie's mom suggested. Nature's Miracle works well for any potty accidents. It completely removes the odor so the dog will not know that he went there in the past. You might also try a regular schedule for going potty, like every few hours or so and shortly after meals. Good Luck!

Another factor might simply be age. For instance, our Poohbear will be hitting 10yo in a month or so, and she has a tendency to "hold it" so as not to make too many trips outside . Things like barking, getting excited, jumping off her chair... well, these actions can cause unwanted material to simply fall out of her. We affectionately call this stuff "Pooh apples". Since I won't make her wear Depends, we deal with it. Many times I have to remind her to go outside... the old grey mare just ain't what she used to be. ![]() If you feel that stress is a factor, then simply be more diligent about "retraining" his timeclock, and being more consistent about feeding times, etc.. just like you'd do with a pup. If his stools are not normal (too runny, too hard), then a checkup is likely in order. There may be a medical reason for his new found incontinence.
