We thought your problems were fixed according to your last post... If you are still having problems regardless of how slight please get serious about doing something to address the dogs behavior with a professional behaviorist/trainer. Even if you aren't having 'issues' every day you need a professional to show you how to deal with, read and redirect your dog. I would hate to read that you or someone else was bit or attacked so again please take his behavior and your approach to fixing it very seriously.

So I'm at this website - Training - And I'm sincerely interested in registering Rosco...

I'm curious though - Is this a program that will aid in Rosco's rehabilitation in being food aggressive, biting, not obeying me, and being dominant?

Which route is better... For those who have read my post, and replied... this question is geared primarily towards you ... Jack, BruniesMom, Gina, etc.

Personal in home Trainer? or Schutzhund Obedience Training?

Which one...(With reasons)

Thanks guys.

You might consider doing in home personal trainer to start so that you get a better handle on your dog without all the distractions of a class for both you and your dog. Once you have things going along and you have his attention even with little distractions, up the ante and put him in a class.

Agreed! You need a personal inhome trainer to help you get this behaviour under control. They will be able to see what you are doing wrong, and what you are allowing him to do...and then help you correct things.

Once you have a handle on this at home...you will benefit from a group class...so that he learns to listen to you under all sorts of distractions.

I am honestly worried for you! This dog seems out of control. Has he bitten anyone or you yet?

I just took a look at the training website that you posted...and I think dogs doing Schutzhund training must be of sound mind?....you cannot take a dog that is out of control...and start training without any obedience background. You need to get your dog into the basics...just normal control and good manners.

Get help ASAP!

I think you also need an in home trainer pronto. What is happening on the stairs at the condo is very disturbing and it will be best to work through that problem using an in home trainer so they can actually see the problem with their own two eyes. Perhaps nothing drastic has happened yet but imagine if one day you were walking past a pack of kids on the stairs or an elderly slow moving and frail lady.... Down the road formal training might be better but you need to solve your most serious issues first which are those that could escalate to a bite.

If you cannot find someone to come in home from the links that were posted you could probably contact the club to ask for a recommendation on trainer.

Re: Professional Rottweiler Behaviorist in Orlando, FL

One other thought, in the interim it might not be a bad idea to put a muzzle on him for walking on the stairs. I mean staircases are not usually the widest of spaces the footing isn't the best, if he lunges and you trip you have no control. If I were in your shoes I would definitely buy and use a muzzle if only for walking on the stairs until I had better control. If you opt for this and he hasn't had a muzzle on before you need to introduce it to him correctly and not make it be a bad thing. So let him check it out. Put some treats by it. Progress to trying to get him to sniff it by his nose, treating the whole time. Try to slide it on the tip of his nose, reward with treats. Get his nose all the way in treating. Next nose all the way in and pull the straps to the back as if you will secure, treat. Next time secure it treat and take it off immediately. From there put it on treat and take it off many times. Start increasing the time it is on only when you are a home and actively supervising. Do not ever leave him alone with a muzzle on his face. The introduction period should take several days. Do not buy a muzzle and just stick it on his face. This is a tool and to be used correctly it will require slow and positive introduction.

There are several people associated with this Club that do pet dog training, as well as trouble shooting and problem solving.

I gave you the list I gave you because I consider these people some of the best around dealing with the issues that you have been experiencing. They will be able to evaluate your dog and sit down with you and spell things out in an honest and knowledgable manner. You can then decide what path to take with the dog.

Schutzhund is not what you need to worry about at this particular point. What you do need to worry about is learning how to communicate honestly and effectively with this animal of yours.

You have been posting about behavioral problems for months now... the longer you wait to do something, the more ingrained his bad behaviors become.

Re: Professional Rottweiler Behaviorist in Orlando, FL

So I just got back from Petsmart, I thought I'd take a trip there with Rosco just to check out there Training program, and speak to the Trainers a bit.

I've been calling around just to figure out the right trainer, I think that's the next hardest thing, because I don't want a trainer who's inexperienced, training my dog wrongly, ya know?

But anyway, how does everyone feel about the PetSmart trainers?

Then why are you looking at a PetSmart trainer. Why aren't you using the trainers listed previously OR calling the club for a referral? I think you would have a greater likelihood of getting a quality and experienced trainer through the club than any big box store.

I've been trying to call Amanda Hoskinson for awhile, and the others don't have any legitimate numbers to call...

I need more references.

Forget about Petsmart trainers!
Petsmart is fine for a puppy socialization class....not for dogs with problems.

You are going to have to be much more pro-active about finding a trainer...and do it ASAP. You've let this bad behaviour go on far too long....and did not get help when we told you to. Now the dog is older and stronger and bigger...and bad habits are getting more ingrained.

Re: Professional Rottweiler Behaviorist in Orlando, FL

Updates:

So, after doing my research online, looking up different trainers, calling different vet hospitals for referrals, going to PetSmart... I think I have found the professional assistance I need...

I just got off the phone with Amanda and feel quite confident and very hopeful with Rosco and his issues...

I addressed to her his breeder situations, his track record, when things started, his Food Aggression, Lunging, Growling, and everything above, and she gave me some good advice...

To keep things short, she invited me out to her Schutzhund club this Sunday so her and her husband can do an assessment of him, and so I can check out there training sessions with the other Rottweilers.

So I'm very thankful for her, and for those who referred her to me... I'm confident, and ready to put an end to this guys little dominance issues, and my correcting issues...

I'll keep everyone updated.
