Thumbs up 10 mo old and Car Sickness

My pupper is so happy and playful, but when she goes in the car she becomes sickly looking and her mouth waters profusely until she eventually vomits, whether or not we feed her before we go.

We live 15 mins away from the dog park and everytime we try to spend our sundays with her at the park we have to turn around b/c she becomes extremely sick. and then as soon as she gets out of the car and sees the house she's THRILLED and back to her normal self...

I've tried taking her in and out of the car showing her the car isn't bad, I take her around the back of my building 10 second drive if that, to do the landry and she still IMMEDIATELY starts drooling, once i park the car the watering from her mouth STOPS...

Can anyone offer us advice? We live in an apartment on the 2nd floor, so she doesn't have a yard with a fence, so other than walking her ,we want to take her to the beach and the park and camping, but how can we if she seems so miserable on the road? I know she'll love being outdoors and just hangin out with us and she deserves it.

any advice at all would help.

Thanks :)

I'm fortunate because both of mine are okay in the vehicle. Here are some threads with tips, hints, etc.

Like humans some dogs dont react to cars well, talk to your vet, they should be able to recommend some drug for it.

They usually grow out of this stage, but there are some things you can give them in the meantime. Talk to your vet -- I've used some homeopathic drops called "Travel Anxiety" that have worked well when I've had pups that tended to get carsick. The only bad thing about giving them anything is it usually makes them so sleepy that once they get to where they are going, they are too sleepy to enjoy it! Mine both LOVE camping!!

Re: 10 mo old and Car Sickness

We had the same problem with our Chunk. Taking him for short trips around the block in the car helped a bit. He seemed to get used to it. However, really the only thing that worked was time. He eventually outgrew the car sickness. I think he was about a year and half.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

It makes me feel better to know that it's something she may grow out of.

I just want her to enjoy herself b/c we like to do a lot of things that I know she would enjoy and we want her to be a part of them

Like I said we thought getting a dog would be practice for a baby... and now she IS my baby... wouldn't have time for a child at this point LOL

thanks again!

Re: 10 mo old and Car Sickness

My dog trainer mentioned these and said he's impressed with how well they work...the theory is by reducing visual stimulii that create the stress, the dog remains calmer....they look really strange but might be worth a try...calming caps:

Re: 10 mo old and Car Sickness

It's similar to blindfolding a horse to get them to load into a trailer more easily. I can tell you my dogs would be MORE stressed out trying to figure out how to get this thing off. I'm sure it would be important to condition the dog to accept it with lots of treats, praise, stroking.
