need advice on rott and chihuahuas

My name is Adrienne and my boyfriend Brandon and I just got a 6-7 month male rott. Before we got the rott we had 2 chihuahuas and 1 boggle, the chihuahuas are males and the boggles a female. Our rott gets along with the boggle but he is constantly fighting with the chihuahuas, because the chihuahuas wont let him get food and when someone is giving the chihuahuas attention they go after each other and the rott comes over by them, we pull the rott away as soon as it happens cause hes so much bigger and we dont want him to kill them but every time there near each other they perk there tails and ears and we dont know how to stop them from fighting.

can someone help?

Post Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

Keep him seperated from the little dogs. They should only be allowed together when you are watching them. How much training have any of your dogs had?
Sounds like all of them need some training.
Get the Rott pup into an obedience class, so that he learns he must mind you at all times.

The rott is very capable of killing any of these dogs, and one day he might...please do not set him up to fail.

Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

My mom just got a chihauhua a little male 7 months old and she asked how rotts where with them as my brother who lives with them has one.

I told her to introduce them through the security door (it is basically a metal screened door) then move to a babygate and then if they do okay supervise them together we use this method in introducing our cats, rabbits and puppies and new people to our dogs this way they can smell each other and get used to seeing the other dog and gradually getting to know each other. We also keep seperate toys, balls and things they might want to fight over well away from the supervised area till we know how they share things.

Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

In my personal experience little dogs have been more often than not left to their own devises. It's easier to pick them up than to train/socialise the properly. Too often I've had to restrain my well behaved dogs because of attacks (yes attacks) of little dogs. I know that when push comes to shove one detering bite could mean the end of the pesky little ones life. Rotts and little breeds can co-exist wonderfully together if both parties are properly suited to do so. My girls have friends of different toy breeds and have a wonderful time. It's quite the amuzing watching a Pom playing tag while your Rott dancing around while trying her darnest not to step on the fluff. I hope that you take all your four footed friends to class and have a professional behaviourist come to your home to help you out. We can give lots of information but in reality only a person on site can get the true picture of the situation. Your take on the events may be biased. A professional will be able to read the dogs properly.

Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

so my brother just got a 10 week old pitt female. she gets along great with the other dogs even the chihuahuas like her. now on the other hand my rott will sumtimes go after her and we dont know why. well we think its because he is attention jelous, because he only does it when she is getting attention. so does anyone have any advice? it would be greatly appritiated... o and by the way the pitt helped break the tension between the rott and the chihuahuas..

Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

I have three Rotts and two pugs. They all get along fine and chase each other. Just this morning the two pugs were chasing my male around the house, it's funny and it's clear to me they would never hurt each other.

The rotties have extreme prey drive and two of them do SchH. I had worries at first they would see the pugs as prey and munch them but no such thing has happened.

Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

I agree with spoiledgirls. I can't count how many times I've had to laugh because owners won't let their small breeds near my big Teddy Bear of a Lab. Then as we walk by we see the small breed having an agression attack and what does Mom/Dad do? Pick up the dog!!!

It kinda sounds like the chiuahas are exerting their dominance.

P.S. What is a boggle??

Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

I have to agree, while taking the rott to classes take the little ones along. I can't recall EVER having seen a well trained chiuahua. They are always lunging at my big rottie when we are out and about at the end of their flexi leads and going nuts.
Nor have I ever seen one in obedience class.
I am not trying to cut down your dogs by any means, but too many people think these don't need to be trained.
You should always feed dogs seperately, food aggression is a big issue between animals, even those who are usually friends.
And high value treats? NEVER put out yummy bones for dogs and expect them each to mind their own.

Re: need advice on rott and chihuahuas

My sister and the g/f's sister both have chiuahua's. They are dominate little dogs.lol My sisters dog attacks people all the time but is not capable of hurting anyone. My 14 month male rott pretty much ignores them but they are constantly attacking him. The only time he did anything is when my sisters dog attacked me right in fornt of him. He simply stepped on him lol. didnt hurt him or anything.

But like everyone else said, the little guys probably need some training too. Plus, never ignore your dog, I always pay equal attention so he doesnt get jealous tendencies. The pit is the new dog around, your rott wants the attention the pits gettin.
