rotti growling at owner

he's a 2 yo unneutred male rotti his previous owners didn't train him in any way. since i've had him 3 mths now we have trained him to sit , stay, go, off, (though he still tests us with that one ) sit and stay until we say he can go to his food bowl , but when we scold him with voice only (no hitting involved i don't believe in hitting a dog)he growls at us . he also growls at strangers inside the house with us , or outside with us. i'd like to know if anyone knows of a reputable obediance trainer in st. pete. fl . area. thanks gail

Re: rotti growling at owner

In addition to getting him formal training, I would recommend getting him neutered, making him do thirty minute down stays, and when he growls perhaps do boot camp heeling.

Re: rotti growling at owner

Why is he not neutered yet?

This is an accident waiting to happen. Growling is his way of saying that he doesn't like something and the fact that he continually is getting away with it is just reinforcing the behavior. Please make sure that he does not come into contact with any young children until you get a better handle on him and he can take a correction without growling or grumbling.

Do a search on here for NILIF ("Noting In Life Is Free") and implement this program into your household immediately.

Good luck in your search for a trainer. This dog is making his own rules and is very vocal in what he thinks about things. He needs to learn that YOU are alpha andhat he is at the bottom of the totem pole in your household.

does anyone know of an organization that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for neutering?

Re: rotti growling at owner

thank you i'll check into the S.N.A.P. organization. i had another male mutt i had neutered it did nothing for him as far as his temparment he was still kid aggressive and dog aggressive. but with my rotti he needs to neutered because he's not a good male for breeding IMO . any dog that shows signs of anxiety, growling, pushing, and jumping up on people and holding them is not a good breeding stock. it's just a good way to get an aggressive high strung bloodline of rottis going and that's a beginning of a doomed breed. gail

Thanks for being so logical about it, I wish there were more people that thought like you! Good luck with him.

Re: rotti growling at owner

he growled at me again yesterday and wouldn't move from the doorway when i came home from work. i nudged him with my foot and said go and used my hand command but he totally ignored me and didn't budge. i was exhausted from the heat (i work outside ) i stepped over him put my stuff down and went to cool down a bit. after a few mins . i got up and went to the door to pet him and he growled at me i wasn't in the mood i grabbed him by the side of his neck and put his head down on the floor and yelled at him. he got really mad and growled louder and tried to lift his head but i knew that would be a big mistake at that point . when he stopped growling i released him and stood up. he laid there. later hubby and i came into the house he was all happy to see hubby but totally ignored me. so be it i'm not letting him have dominance over me i will get hurt eventually . i called the local spca but we've been playing phone tag. i want to ask about training him and neutering. today he's been fine except jumping up on me and holding me when i came home i brought my knee up into his chest and pushed him off and yelled off!! as i pushed him he got down and walked away. then he returned and tried pushing me with his butt i pushed him back hard with my knee he turned and looked at me and again walked off. gail

Re: rotti growling at owner

He thinks he's alpha. Get him into formal training with you or you are in for much worse. From your description of the event, I'm very concerned that he will bite.

Others here have recommended feeding by hand at dinner to re-affirm alpha status. That may be an option. Him growling, while it is always better than a bite, has me concerned. There was no legit reason to growl. It sounds like you are lowest one on the totem pole. Use NIFIL and fix that.

Buy training treats and keep them on you. Want him to move? reward good behavior. Ignore bad or if you are comfortable do a correction. It sounds like he is too big for his britches and needs to rethink his doggie self. good luck!
