Mounting etc...

Whisky is now eight months. His mounting behaviour (at least with me) is very much under control. But when I have my period (like now) there is no stopping him. He is virtually glued to me, licking me all over and gets really upset when I do not allow him (while otherwise he stops when ordered). What's the best way to handle this behaviour? Do other women also have this problem?

Re: Mounting etc...

This is a behaviour you must stop now! Be very firm, he should not be allowed to be sniffing or licking you. Give him a very firm correction for this.

I've had male dogs for over 30 years and have never had this kind of behaviour from a dog. If you are the leader in the home, he would not even be trying this with you.

I suggest you not even allow him to think of doing this to you. Are you planning on having him neutered?

Guess it's a point we still have to work on, I'll keep him on a leash the next days in order to be able to correct him. Licking generally I thought this was not bad at all??? Just showing affection, am I wrong?

We are still discussing wether we will have him neutered or not. I think somehow for him it wouldn't be bad at all. There are so many mixed opinions on this subject...

I see nothing wrong with a dog giving his or her owner a quick lick now and again. In your case, I see plenty wrong. It's harrassment. Subordinate dogs don't harrass those above them in the pecking order.

I'm with brunie's mom on this--in all my years of Rottie ownership, I've never had a male dog behave rudely to me more than once.

The best way to handle Whisky's bullying of you is to get yourself and him into class. Practice NILIF with him. His harrassment of you shows he doesn't regard you as his leader.

Thank you for the advice. We are already practicing NILIF (which had great results with earlier behaviour). Going into class is not an option, we don't have this around here.

Re: Mounting etc...

He would not even have attempted to mount you if he saw you as the leader. In all of the years I've had dogs....never has one attempted to mount me or lick or bully me. He would have his block knocked off the first time, and that would be the end of it.

Showing this much licking and attention is not normal for a dog that is seeing you as leader. I would not allow him to lick you...if he starts...put him in a down-stay and leave him there for a few minutes.

I would get him neutered this dog sounds like he is pushy and trying to dominate you, and there is no reason to keep him intact.
If he is trying this kind of crap on you at 8 months of age....you will have huge problems if you do not correct this now when he is an adult.

You are the one that sets the rules and boundries....and do NOT put up with this behaviour.

Indeed true!

The behavior we see in our young dogs--be it good or bad--is what we can expect to see our mature dogs. Whisky's behavior to you now, at 8 mo old, may be annoying and exasperating. You will find it a menace when he's a mature male Rottie.
