Sleeping in the Bed

Okay this is the problem.. My Rottie Rebel has been sleeping in the bed with me since he was a puppy he is now 2. I do mean every night under the covers. Well I just got married so there is a new man in the bed. We have tried to let him stay in the room we bought a doggie bed just for him on my side of the bed didn't work. All night long he tired to get in the bed this went on for weeks. He never gave up trying. We tired to put him out the room. He eat my floor,my door, and cried all night. So right now he is still sleeping with us. Does anyone have any suggestion on how i can stop this with out making him feel he is longer part of the family.

Thanks,
Tessa

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

I think of the dog being allowed on a bed or the furniture as a privilege, not a right...

I've never let my dogs sleep in the bed, but initially it was only because I had cats, they were here first, and I didn't want to disrupt their routine. I have, however, let the dogs get on a couch or chair, but when they started their teenage phase they got a little pushy and mouthy so they're no longer allowed on any furniture. The differences in their behavior and attitude was subtle, but I did see an improvement.

Since I've let them up in the past they still sometimes try to get on the couch or chair, even months later. However, when I see them doing this, I tell them "off."

If, at night, your dog isn't obeying, you might want to try crating him. You might still hear whining for a few nights, but he should eventually get the idea. Alternatively, just keep telling him "off" and redirect him to his new bed on the floor.

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

I completely agree. I would start from square one again and crate him and deal with the whining. He will eventually get over it. I would then make it known to him that the bed is yours, not his. Shelby is only allowed on furniture if she's invited (unless it's her couch in the living room, it's funny how she knows which is her couch and which is ours) If it's time to get off, we give an "off" command and down she goes - no hesistation.

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

Get a crate and start crate training him. Rebel will be a part of your family--tho the one who sleeps in a crate.

Gotta say--that's one astonishingly NICE husband you have there!

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

My dog Dixie use to sleep with us too. A king sized bed is a godsend in that situation.

She's now choosen on her own to stop - I think we get in her way. That might happen to you too.

Try this, let him come up and spend some love time with him, then when you are ready to sleep just tell him to get down. I think that's what got Dixie away from it. She won't sleep with me even if I'm alone in the bed now.

The bed is free game once we leave for work however.

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

My rott (6 mo female) sleeps on my bed, a queen size, and being single, not a big deal to me. My pointer hound has kept me warm for years anyway, I like the company. Those giant feet though, start to get on my nerves! She's always sticking them in my back, trying to stretch out. A king size bed is just too huge, I'm thinking about getting a second bed, a small, student size at a discount store or sumthin. Then I'll put this right next to mine and make it "their bed." Either that or build them one. I really enjoy their company, and my Rott pup snuggles up and sleeps just as calm and sound as she could....but I need my space back!

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

My Rottie used to sleep with me until I got married as well. Then he had to move to the floor next to me. Of course, he wasn't happy about it and for about one month or so, he would pee on hubby's clothes every chance he got if they were on the floor. He eventually got used to the idea after I had him sleep in his "place" on the first floor for awhile. After about 3 weeks, he was happy to be back in the bedroom next to me.

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

Could you have your husband sleep on the floor? Joking.

Try putting the crate in your room with you. The dog won't be able to pee on clothes and he'll still be with you. Try the crate on your side of the bed if possible. That's where my guys sleeps.

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

Raelin was on the bed for the first while, but it had to change, I was not getting any rest. It took a few weeks of telling her off every time she jumped up, and I am SURE it was harder on me then her, but she now sleeps either beside the bed or on the sofa (I know, I know, it is a whole other issue!! )

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

Well everyone last night was a very long night. Everytime he would jump on the bed I would tell him down. He is very head strong, about 3:00 AM I think he got the idea that I was not going to let him on the bed. We will see what tonight brings. Thanks to everyone for your advice. Rebel is my first rottie I ever owned it is a learng expericance every day. But I would not give him up for all the tea in China. they are great pets or as we call Rebel human dog cause that is what he thinks the is. Ha Ha

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

LOL, I am just laughing at this post, it brings back fond memories. Granted, I wasn't so fond of the antics in the bedroom (from Rommel that is!). I miss him every day and would gladly let him have the bed. Seriously, it did teach me a lesson. Our 10 mo does not sleep in our room. He stays on the first floor in his own "space" and is very happy there. PS, when Rommel peed on hubby's clothes, hubby actually started picking up after himself, something I couldn't get him to do!

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

Our girl Brina sleeps in our king bed with us. Started it after we had to pts our 10 year old(Brinas mother)and we felt bad because she missed her(yea I know its no excuse). I am only 5 ft, so she sleeps on the bottom end of my side of the bed, she knows dont go on hubbys side he is 6 ft. Our puppy Meeka(5 mths) sleeps on floor on her dog bed. After my hubby leaves for work in the morning at 5am the puppy gets to come up on the bed for about an hour and she gos back to sleep. I know i am doing it all wrong to some people but it works for us.

Re: Sleeping in the Bed

I have one Rottweiler and 2 Cavaliers who sleep on my bed. Not in it though.
No problems here, I have a large bed.

This thread is testimony to remind us to start off the way we mean to continue.

Crating the dog beside your bed is probably the best way to change his sleeping habits.
I agree you have a very nice husband.
