| How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? Hello all, I am in need of some help. I have a 7 month old rottie that jumps on everyone she sees. Anytime someone comes into the house, i have to put her in her area or her cage because she gets really excited and wants to jump on them for attention/greeting. I also have twin babies in the house and i want them to interact with her more, but she jumps too much for me to feel comfortable with that. she interacts when the kids when they are in their high chairs, but not much when we are all sitting in the living room (which is why she has her own area). There isn’t to much of a problem walking her anymore, she used to jump at people, but since I started using a prong collar, she has stopped that. The only other time she jumps on folks, is when we are at the dog park. She doesn’t care much for the dogs at the park, but she is definitely interested in the people there. She is very friendly and affectionate, but because of the type of dog she is, people mistake her friendliness for aggressiveness. thanks. |

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? I hope people don't bash me for this, but it is quick and has worked on both the rotts I have owned. When she jumps up, step on her back feet and give some sort of verbal correction. Then tell her to sit and when she does, praise the heck out of her. When I say step on her feet, I don't mean bash them. Just make it uncomfortable. When company comes to the house, have her on a leash until she calms down. Watch the twins religiously around the dog. Let them interact when she is calm and willing. My kids have had a rott in the house pretty much since they were born and we have avoided any bad incidents by always supervising the dog and kids. Correcting either when necessary.

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? When she jumps up, walk INTO her - invade her space the same way she is trying to invade yours. What does a dog do when it jumps and you back up? It jumps again. Walk INTO the dog as it jumps (or before) and it'll stop jumping. PRAISE as soon as all four feet are on the floor. If the dog backs up and tries again, walk into it again. Train the dog that 'four on the floor' is what gets the dog attention from people. |

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? When she is up in the jumping up, you can pinch lightly between her front toes and give the command sit at the same time... Then pet and give affection when she is sitting quietly and calmly. At the parks, are the people coming up to her or is she coming up to them?

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? We did it with the help of the people at the dog-club.On the training-field and in the club-house we had an agreement with the members they would come by to pet him(what he loved) but when he broke his 'sit' they turned around and left him .Meanwhile he was given by me a verbal- and leash -correction(the moment he broke the "sit").It worked out very fine in a few weeks. The only thing that moves now when people come to pet,is half his butt and his whole tail

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? We use to walk into ours and put our knee up to keep her from achieving her goal. She's now 3 years old and does not jump on anyone, anymore. Be sure to ALWAYS, ALWAYS supervise your dog with others. You are responsible for your dogs actions wherever you may be. |

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? I don't see any mention that you have her in obed classes. These classes are marvelous things. The trainer trains you how to train your dog. The bond between you and your dog strengthens. The dog learns self control. Once she knows Sit Stay, it's impossible for her to jump up on anyone. I'm guessing that in addition to being mentally underexercised (she's not in class and you're not working her everyday), physically she doesn't get enough exercise, either. |

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? We havent enrolled in any classes. ive been using training methods from various sources and so far, we've been doing a pretty good job. She is proficient in the recall, the sit, the stay and the the hand shake There are definately tons of things for me to learn, but right now, Azul does what i want her to do when i want her to do it, except for the jumping....which is why i came here to ask knowledgeable people, so that i can get some ideas. as far as exercise goes, she gets a good walk/run or a trip to the dog park at least 5 days out of the week. i live in a hilly area, so even if we only walk a few blocks, we have to walk up and down some pretty steep hills. One thing that ive found, is that its easier to train her after she has had some good exercise. The days we dont walk, i break out my trusty laser light and make her go crazy chasing the red dot....who would have known that the two of us would have gotten so much enjoyment from a laser pen? |

| Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? Have a batch of really good treats (1/2" dices of hot dog, or last nights left over pork chop, diced string cheese, etc) and, later, clicker. With the dog in front of you, begin rewarding ONLY when all fours are down. If she begins to make an upward movement, move the treat to where she can't attain it from you. Closed hand. But, as soon as all fours are on the ground reward again. You will see the dog begin to puzzle things out. She's THINKING! "How do I get that yummy treat?" Continue for a few minutes and stop. Begin the exercise again, later in the day. Same process, same amount of time. After you've done it this way 3-4 times the first day, go on to day two. Add the clicker. When all fours are on the ground. click and treat. Time the click carefully to coincide with longer lengths of time with all fours down... but not so much that the dog is confused by the wait. A few seconds increase is good enough, and you need not extend this to minutes. She'll get the idea without that. Once you've clicked you always reward. No excuses! However... what if she's been clicked and before you give the treat, she jumps? Stop wait, reward when she's down again. If she begins jumping nearly every time, stop. Go back to "day one" practices. Always go back to where the dog was successful, before ending a lesson. Lessons should be no longer than 5 minutes each. Three to four sets of lessons is sufficient each day. In about a week you should begin to see a difference. You can now give it a name if you wish during your practice sessions. "Feet." "Ground." "Floor" "Uh, Uhh..." as long as it's not something you will use for other commands, like "down" for lay down, or even "off" for off the couch. As I mentioned, if your see the dog unwilling to keep it up, always, always go back to day one practice. She'll get it. And yes, I agree. She needs obedience classes ASAP. And if you've gone, don't stop at one set of classes. Her mind needs the stimulation. If you don't make and effort, she will sadly but slowly be confined more and more. Is that what you want for her?

Has anyone heard this or is an urban legend?? Your puppy is young. You may find your training methods aren't as effective when she becomes an adolescent. You really should consider signing yourselves up for obed classes. |

It's not an urban legend. Many dogs become obessive compulsive over lights...any lights, and shadows...and sunbeams,,,etc. It is not recommended to exercise a dog or use a laser pointer or flashlight. Get the dog into obedience classes...it's a great way to train your dog with distractions and to socialize your dog and to learn from other people in the class. With Rottweilers it's a must to attend obedience classes...and keep on going for the next couple of years. This is a very smart breed that loves to learn...the classes will teach you how to teach your dog. Who knows...you may want to get into fun things with your dog...like competative obedience, or agility or Rally-O or tracking, etc. You have a young dog, that needs more exercise...and more training. | Re: How do i stop my dog from Jumping on people??? Gabi is 5.5 months and has just started this very annoying behavior. She is a 55 lb. black tasmanian devil, lately. Prior to Gabi, I've always used either the tap on the back feet (just a tap) or a slight knee (not hard) to the chest to push them down. These worked, but in the Gabi's puppy kindergarten class, we've been told to ignore the behavior. I tried this ignoring method but its not working so now I'm contemplating going back to my old methods. She is a bit bull-headed lately. |
