18 mo old nipping We adopted an 18-mo old and she is great other than now she has started nipping/love bites to us mostly the kids not hard and not breaking skin. I have done the NO and showed her what she can chew on but is there anything else I can do. She is great and is well mannered otherwise. My other rotti never did this so this is a first for me. I have searched the forums and have tried those. Also she does not do this all the time only when she seems happy to see the kids and is excited? She also has an underbite which was noted by the vet but it does not seem to interfere with her eating or anything else? Thanks for the help

Re: 18 mo old nipping When is she nipping? Only when excited? When did she start doing this? Put a leash on her and redirect to something she IS allowed to put her teeth on. If the kids get her all riled up then they need to be taught how to play appropriately with the dog to prevent the biting. How long has she been with you? Have you attended classes with her? How much exercise (mental and physical) does she get daily? She may need more physical exercise. As for the underbite - doesn't matter unless it begins to interfere with her eating or breathing. We had a rescue foster with an underbite and it did not affect her at all except she often appeared to be pouting - her lower lip was pushed out a little, almost like a bulldog - it was cute!

Re: 18 mo old nipping We have a foster, somewhere between 8 mo and a year who, when he gets excited, becomes mouthy....sounds similar to your girl. What we've learned is that ANY interaction feeds the behavior. When our boy gets wound up, we stop, fold our arms, and look up at the ceiling...you can also try keeping your back to her also while ignoring her...the point is NO INTERACTION. Once we do that our foster looses interest within a few seconds...usually just stands there looking at us. At that point (when calm), praise the behavior and treat (to reward calm behavior). Good luck.

She just seems to do it when she is excited to see the kids. This morning she had been taken out of her kennel put outside to potty and my daughter came downstairs to get in the bath and Jada was excited and nipped. Of course my daughter started crying and Jada was gotten after. I could tell by the dog she was just completely excited to see my daughter no aggression whatsoever. She has done this since we brought her home rescued. No I have to admit I do not feel that there is a qualified class locally and have never taken one either. As for exercise I work from home so she is outside as much as she likes to be and plays with the neighbor dogs and our dauschund so I dont think lack of exercise is her problem. I will try the options that you both suggested and go from there just wondered if there was some other way. She also is not very interested in her toys as I dont believe she probably ever had any prior to our home so have been working on many different toys to find what she likes. bones she likes but still looking for something else have tried rope toys, tires, balls...

Re: 18 mo old nipping I would strongly suggest finding an obedience class - structured training classes will do wonders for her self control and her respect for you. Where are you located?

Re: 18 mo old nipping My rottie did the same thing from about 8 months until about a year ago, he is almost 3. He grew out of it, he was just so excited to see someone that he would nip in the butt! I told him no each and every time, I even had to put him in his cage, nothing seemed to work, then one day he decided he didn't like butt's anymore and just quit!

Re: 18 mo old nipping its just excitement, make the kids wait a few seconds to greet her then stop if she bites, sounds to me like she loves her new home.
