Re: is this licking common?

It's a common thing for all dogs to keep themselves clean, not just Rottweilers. If you find he's incessant about it, that's another story and could be from fleas or something else.

Re: is this licking common?

It's normal for dogs to lick themselves...however, I just came off a house sitting job where the RottyXRidgeback licked her "girl bits" all day long because she suffered from anxiety. She ended up with a bit of a UTI...happens each time her mom goes away.

Licking is fine...just know the difference between keeping clean and an obsession or an infection.

Re: is this licking common?

SInce we are talking about licking, I was wondering why my dog licks everything. I think that maybe he was a snake in his past life After awhile it can get pretty annoying. My last Rottie wasn't like that. Any thoughts?

Mine licks the screen door (glass now due to winter), when he is ready to come inside. No barking or whinning, just licks and licks and licks the glass door. Slobber running down all over the place, but that spot is really clean.

What about licking with a little bit of munching/biting if its not all the time (since we're ont he topic), is that okay as well? I think thats Gunner's way of "grooming" his tail area.

Shelby licks a lot too. Not herself though, but she'll lick our hands or feet forever it seems like. I wonder why....

Re: is this licking common?

Dog hygiene is = licking and that is normal.

However … licking is many things!

Dog to dog … the licking ceremony is normal …. We shake hands to say hello, dogs sniff and lick butts !

Licking is normal and mental sound dogs communicate rang/inferiority by licking... normal too...
But any kind of exaggerated licking is a sign of some wrong… physical (e.g. a sore spot) or mental (e.g. the dog is insecure/scared/frustrarted )

Re: is this licking common?

My Rottie will lick his rear if his anal glands are leaking, but it is definitely less than once a day.

Re: is this licking common?

Sounds silly, but have you tried a bath? This could be many things--Sadie doesn't lick so much after a bath, but my last dog (a husky/shephard mix) always licked when she needed her anal glands squeezed (gross but true).

Re: is this licking common?

My Max tries to lick you when you pass by, on the floor, the screen door and himself. If you try to pet him, he'll try to lick you. Sometimes that could be annoying especially when you just finished washing your hands...
