Constant barking; non responsive

Hello all, slight issue with my girl. She is 3 years old and has been through all kinds of obedience training. She has always been good at listening, but latley, in the last 6 months, she has been getting progressivly worse with barking at everything, especially when someone comes to the door. I tell her no,make her sit, but it is like I am completly not there, she totaly ignores me. This is the only thing that she is becoming very disobedient with, the barking. She has also taken up agressivly barking at people that walk by the house, and rasing her "mohawk" something she NEVER used to do. Nothing has changed around her, so I am wondering if there is some logical explanation for the barking and not listening. Any help would be great.

Some nights my rott barks all night and I put the bark collar on and he stops. But maybe something else is going on with you dog.

If it is that bad, you might want to consider a citronella bark stop collar. A stern verbal corection has always worked for me though. Pick a different word besides "no". like "stop it" "quiet" "quit" etc to identify with the barking only. "no" is too commonly used in human vocabulary.

What do you do when she ignores you?

I have issues with my pom jumping on people when they come into my house. I have found that if I put him in a sit BEFORE I open the door, he is much better and if he blows me off - I get out a leash and he will sit or down until I see that he has calmed enough to greet company calmly.

I'm a huge fan of wearing out my dogs with physical and mental exercise. In my experience, a tired, worn out dog is much more interested in napping than engaging in nuisance behavior.

How much hard physical exercise is she getting?

Re: Constant barking; non responsive

If any of mine don't have their BEST door manners on when company arrives, they don't get the privilege of visiting. They are crated and out of sight in another room. Generally, after a few times like this...they suddenly remember their manners again (because they can hear the others getting attention for having good manners)! And this includes my 6 mo girl...she is getting much better at door manners because she is an "attention hog"...she is beside herself if noone notices her. Good luck!

The barking out the window is a self rewarding behaviour...person walks by, dog barks, person leaves, dog gets what it wanted.
You will likely have to take away her access to the window.

As far as the door, a leash and collar each and every time and being made to sit should help you regain control and keep her from blowing you off.

Re: Constant barking; non responsive

I agree with AngelBunny. Exercise has been the key with my rotts. I notice when they get bored the barkies start up. I also make them stay with me, through out the house. They have to work, like if I'm doing laundry they have to heal with me to the machines and sit and stay while I load/unload etc. I'm sure you get the picture. If I go upstairs to do something they go in the crates (upstairs is a dog-free zone) until I come back down and let them out.
good luck
Niki

I agree whole heartedly, tired dogs are happy well behaved dogs. You may think she/ he is getting enough exercise but she/he is telling you they are not. Bored would be the first thing to check before you get too woried.
