Exclamation Mr. Laidback - Very mild personality

My Tucker is a 1 1/2 y.o. rescue (neutered male). He has the sweetest personality and much patience (so far). His little playmate is a JR/Chi mix who sometimes snarls at him. Tucker just takes it in stride and pay no attention. When we are at the dog park he plays well with the other dogs, even tolerating it when some dogs try and " hump" him. On the trails he walks very well and isn't interested in bikes or anything on wheels. He once backed up and growled at a jogger that surprised him, but mostly his attitude is " whatever". He's been to 2 of the dog events with lots of people & dogs around him and again he's "whatever" in his attitude. My question is, is this likely to remain his personality, or is he going to grow up into someone less aloof? Oh yes, he still doesn't lift his leg all the time to pee, so I'm thinking he is still going thru his puppy stage.

thank you

I think I read somewhere that leg lifting is a learned thing...maybe I'm wrong. I know my dog bear doesn't lift his leg 100% of the time and he's 18 months.

I used to think that dog is more likely to become more layed back as they get older....but with Bear....I'm not sure he ever will. While I have more control of him when we're out than I did at first....he's still the same dog with more energy than I ever thought a dog should have....I once had dreams of getting into therapy work with him but after trying out some sports with him I think that is where his heart and mind are and that's PERFECTLY FINE with me!

Re: Mr. Laidback - Very mild personality

For 1 and a half and he's laid back!! Personally, I think that is awesome and for a rescue, even better!! It sounds like you didn't have to do a "boot camp" for him. I would think you would want a Mr. Cool, Calm and Collected dog!! When you ask about aloof, do you want him to be more indifferent towards strangers or is the underlining question, Will he protect me as a Mr. Laidback rottie? If he's laid back now(a still maturing rottie), I'm inclined to think that it is his personality and that he will stay that way...

Re: Mr. Laidback - Very mild personality

Tucker is still maturing. I'm no expert but mine went through a more reserved mode when it came to strangers at about two. It is said these dogs do not reach maturity until around three years old. That is why training constantly is so important through this portion of their lives. One of mine got far more territorial at three. Still laid back but alot more choosey about situations...Good Luck with your boy and thank you for rescueing...Tina
