Re: No barking

This is a bad thing? I wouldn't mind a quiet dog. Serena barks rarely or she does the whisper bark. Unless I'm mistaken Rotts are not very loud. Not to say they don't bark, just the two I have owned have been relatively quiet. Have the vet check to make sure there isn't a problem.

Re: No barking

There is nothing wrong with him not barking. He is still just a puppy.
Our boy Kaleb is 8 1/2 months old and he rarely barks. The only time he barks is if he is trying to get the other dogs to play or if he is given the bark command. I LOVE that he doesn't bark all the time since it can get VERY annoying

Why is this not a good thing? Have you installed an alarm system? That would be more effective I think. I believe it's good that your puppy is friendly to strangers.

Re: No barking

I have 2 boys. My 10 year old was just as you described as a pup. Quiet, didn't bark, very docile, loved everyone (still does), my "little" one, now just about 8 months, has a big mouth!!! UGGH! They are all different. My big guy always "found his bark" when he needed to. If he barks, I know for sure that something is up and it is not just foolishness. His lack of bark never made him any less capable of letting us know something is off.

Re: No barking

I have a "barker" and the "strong silent" one....believe me if I got the choice who I would want to greet me as an unwelcome stranger...hands down it would be the "barker"!!!! That being said you will come to realize the true character of these dogs, although I have NO doubt either of my two would "protect" me in a bad situation, it is MORE my responsibilty to protect them.....Tina

Re: No barking

We thought Sable's bark was broken when she was a pup. Didn't even hear it for the first six months, at all.

There's nothing wrong with a dog who has enough sense not to bark at every little thing. It goes to the breed description of being calm, and confident, with a wait and see attitude. But yours is a puppy. It will take a while for him to grow into that description. Hopefully be's busy developing descretion, before he discovers his bark.

Re: No barking

Like everyone else has said your Boy is still a baby and needs time to mature. When you were a child you didn't know whom would hurt you or whom was going to be friendily which is why your parents protected you. It is no different for an immature dog.

I also think that he will surprise you. My dogs have been the joke for along time. Everyone including me always said if anyone ever tried to break in my dogs would show them where all the goods were because anyone that ever came over was treated like an old lost friend including the UPS guy. However one day a friend of mine called me on my Cell asking if she could barrow one of my Chihuahuas for a presenbtation for her class. I agreed and she said she would bring the dog to my work to return the dog. I told her the backdoor was unlocked. My Chihuahuas weren't very old at the time and Thankfully I was still putting both Bear and Daphne (Daphne was a little over 2 and Bear was 22 mths.) in crates when I left (Daphne doesn't use a crate anymore). She called me a few hours later to tell me she didn't take the dog because of the Rottweilers. She said they didn't make a sound when she came in the house until she picked up Tinky and then she said she was scared the Rottweilers were going to break out of thier crates and come after her because they were going ballistic in their crates. I have since been told of Daphne barking at my neighbors if they are on the property when I am not home.Daphne doesn't bark when I am home just occasionally whines if someone pulls in the driveway she really wants to see NOW! If I am home though again everyone is their best friend.

Re: No barking

Have a rescue, she is about 3. She has been at my house for around 3 days. Sweet as can be, but she isn't behaving all that well. Yesterday she crapped on my carpets, shredded and stuffed bird and was found on my futon.

Welcome! Glad she found someone willing to rescue. Are you in contact with the rescue group? They may have additional suggestions.

First, she's only been there 3 days. Give the girl a chance. She need time to adjust. She may be uneasy and uncertain of what to do. Getting a crate for her might be something you'll want to think about. (see below)

That, and she may need some additional activity. How many times does she get to go for a walk? For how long? And have you found some obedience classes?

Rottweilers thrive on being with their people. Classes and walks and playing games, like hide and seek in a fenced area, or tossing a ball, all qualify as fun! And I can guarantee, you won't regret one minute of time you spend training and working with your dog. It comes back warmly, in the form of a bond and loyalty and trust, from your dog.

The more you occupy her mind and body the better pet you'll have. Rottweilers are an intellegent, thinking breed. If you fail to keep them occupied, they will find things you don't like. Generally out of boredom.

Don't leave stuffed toys laying about, unless they are hers. Some are shredders, some take care of some toys, but not others. She should have a basket or container for toys that are just hers. If you have a child, you'll have to redirect her to her own, more durable toys. She'll learn.

Back to the crate. You can hit the search button on the blue strip above and type in "crate training." Crates also work well for when you are not able to supervise or when you leave the house.

What did you name your girl?

To the OP: Koda is such a great name!

Re: No barking

Thanks for writing. Her name is Casey and will keep her name . I've been walking her and all, trying to encourage her to go bye-bye (potty). Today was good for her going while on the leash when I was walking her but she still crapped in the patio outside when we were at work.
I've called the rescue group twice to no avail. Tyring to see if they think the crate will be good or what.
Not giving up. I can keep her for 1 week and then decide to keep her. She is in my heart already, just have to work on ther training. The rescue group said she was totally housebroken. Maybe it is her nerves.
She too hasn't barked for days but has lots of hugs . What every person needs:)
