I need some advice ....

I need some advice! We have 2 rottweilers. Our male (brutis) is almost 9 mons, and our female is 10 wks. Our problem is with Brutis. He went threw puppy kindergarden and di very well. We now have him obidence training, he's doing very well again. Brutis has been housebroken for over 6 mons now. We have not had an accident since aleast mid september. We have had our Bailey (10wks) for almost 2 wks. She is doing well with her house training and even though she was very shy at first has settled in very nicely.
Now for the problem. We have caught Brutis cocking up his leg and peeing a bit. First time was in the door way and i was shocked. This morning he did it right on my couch. I dont know if this part of the whole dominace thing or if it's becasue of him being a male and bailey being a female. How do I correct this problem. Will having Brutis fixed help? We are planning on having him fixed but if this will help then I'd rather do it sooner then later.
Any suggestions about this will be a big help. Everything else to do with our dogs is fine, They are always out for walks, on a good eating schedule, and both in seperate crates. They seem to get along very well togther and with everyone in the house.

Re: I need some advice ....

He doesn't necessarily need to be neutered but you will have to give him a "health hath no fury" correction when you catch him doing it. Around 10 months Rocco lifted his leg and peed on a dining room chair. He got read the riot act right then and there.......he tried it once more the next day and I caught him before he went and repeated the "I mean it" correction and he never did it again. They have to know in no uncertain terms that this is not acceptable.

Re: I need some advice ....

I'm just guessing here but I think it's just a territorial thing. My Rottie runs over to my other rottie mix when the mix is peeing and tries to pee on him while hes peeing but usually my mix moves and pees somewhere else. My pure rottie always finds where my other rottie pee'd and pees over it!

Re: I need some advice ....

I don't think this behavior is that unusual when introducing a new dog into your home. Even if the perp is a female and spayed, LOL! The first couple of times my son's dog came to visit after Chili came home, she went straight upstairs and peed! She is a frequent visitor and has not done that before. Needless to say, she lost upstairs privileges, has now adjusted to the little rascal, and regained her privileges.

Nail him when he even thinks about lifting his leg in the house! I think it is simply marking territory for the new kid in town, and if it is caught and "prosecuted", it will cease.

Re: I need some advice ....

It sure seems to me that at around 7 to 9 months I hear a lot of folks have dogs that back slide in the house breaking department. As the others said, I would just make sure if you can catch him in the act, make him think by using your voice, his world is coming to an end for that behavior. Take him back to square one as far as housebreaking goes if you need to.

Re: I need some advice ....

Julius was reliable in the house-training department by the time he was about 6 months old. Never marked or had an accident (except for times his tummy was upset) until we watching a co-workers puppy for a week over Christmas break. The puppy had an accident inside & Julius marked right over top of it. We read him the riot act & he didn't try it again.

When he was around one, he tried to mark inside of a local pet store & was read the riot act then as well. We made him to some snappy heeling patterns inside the store & some quick downs. Hasn't tried it since & he's 3.5 years old.

Re: I need some advice ....

Thank you all very much for responding! I think it is a territory thing too. When I seen him doing it I yelled and he just stopped and put his head down. I am hoping this wont happen again but if it does I will continue to use the "voice" and let him know I mean buissness. Thanks again everyone.

Re: I need some advice ....

Chrisseh5 - while I do agree with what everyone is saying here about using your voice and giving him supreme kaka for even thinking of lifting his leg, I'd like to also add that I feel neutering my solve your problem.

I have a male that used to try and mark in the house quite frequently. The problem was "catching" him doing it because his thing was an "I'm mad at you because....."......for instance if I went out in the yard and didn't take him, he'd pee on something. Or, if a strange dog came into the house he'd cock his leg. Believe me he got heck many times.....so eventually he got smart and decided to do it when no one could catch him in the act! Lil' bugger!

He was neutered at two years of age and he's never marked since. So, that is my reasoning behind why neutering may help. If you continue to have problems with marking after giving him the sermon you may want to have the neuter done sooner rather than later....might fix your problem

I'm certainly hoping that you are talking about your dogs when they are OUTSIDE and that this behavior is not happening INSIDE the house as the OP is asking about. If this is happening outside, it is ok, but if it is inside, you have a lot of training and correcting to do!

Re: I need some advice ....

I have a male mutt that started peeing on everything new in the house when we brought our rott baby home almost a year ago. I get after him every time I catch him doing it but nothing works. He now waits until I leave the room or I am gone before he does it so he wont be caught in the act. I finally broke down and locked him in a cage when he was inside and I was not home, and when I am home he has to wear a male wrap inside the house (dog diaper that you can pick up at pets mart or on the net).

So you have taught him that if he waits long enough, you will leave and he can then pee in peace. See something wrong with this picture?

I finally broke down and locked him in a cage when he was inside and I was not home

Broke down? What's the big deal about this? It is where he should have been put when he was a puppy so that this type of behaivor never started. If you are diligent and start him all over again like you would a puppy, you can retrain him to not pee in your home. Take him out every hour and give him the opportunity to pee. Tie him to your waist when he is in the house with you.

It is a simple fix if you apply the proper training.

and when I am home he has to wear a male wrap inside the house (dog diaper that you can pick up at pets mart or on the net)

Why? Why do you continue to let him run loose in the house after he has marked all over it? Having him wear a diaper is not training him to correct the problem.

Put your mind to it, and get to work on TRAINING this dog.

Re: I need some advice ....

The mutt was over a year old when I rescued him. Has been potty trained and never marked in the house before. The Rott is an unspayed female. The male mutt had been neutered at a late age and the trainer that he goes too said that there is not much we can do about him marking in the house until the puppy is spayed since he was fixed at such a late age. I live in Texas. Summers over here are over 100 degrees and there is no way I will leave any dog in the back yard in that kind of heat. I also have a spayed female mutt, the male never once marked in the house with the other female since she is spayed.
