Re: Spray bottle Training

Just chiming in to say, that I perfer more positive methods, as well. Spraying, is far more of a startle method. And it doesn't reinforce the behavior you DO want. I'd pack my garbage bin behind a cupboard door, or somewhere out of reach. Toss the book.

Re: Spray bottle Training

Thanks everyone, I think that I will continue to put my recycling box on top of the garbage can and retire the spray bottle.

Re: Spray bottle Training

Um, I've never used a spray bottle on my rottie (never thought to). I've only ever used it on my cats, and it works (usually) because they hate water.

I can just imagine spraying my puppy, who loves water. He would ask for more!

good luck!

Re: Spray bottle Training

One of the problems with squirt bottles is that your significant other may decide its funny to use it on YOU!

And when you say " You'd be pissed if I did that to you!" He'll say "Yeah I would!" and start laughing hystrically!

Really, he is worse than the dog!

Re: Spray bottle Training

That Discovery channel show had a trainer on it who used a squirt gun to stop one of those westie dogs from barking at the door...It did work and the westie did NOT enjoy the water LOL!

I personally LOVE to chase my dogs around squirt them with the super soaker I have. They repay me by sitting on my lap soaking wet and "goosing" me in the butt with their noses afterwards. I got the gun as a training aid for my cat and to harass my dogs and husband. Multi-purpose indeed!!

I once squirted Bear with the garden hose when he was barking at someone in the street and the next day I found the hose in about twenty peices all over the yard. The only peice that "survived" the attack was the nozzle.

Run and duck for cover cause that means DH stole it from me LOL!

My best and most frequently dog utilized training aid is my voice and hands. The cat defies me constantly so I must resort to more dramatic means in getting my point across........

Re: Spray bottle Training

The title of this thread is a misnomer....spraying your dog with water is NOT training your dog.

Seems reasonable to me...but I was wondering if anyone out there can think of any potentially negative things about this form of deterrance?

I remember now! About 5 years back people were promoting spraying Bitter Apple in a dog's face when the animal misbehaved..Could this be what your book was talking about? Whenever you read a dog training book, be sure to check WHEN it was written. Some books I have still promote the take down method and scruff shaking...Be very careful what you read.
