Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

This is never an easy decision. I've been there as well. My only regret was I waited too long. Luckily no one was injured. Yes, sometimes, all the love in the world, and everything else, cannot overcome bad genetics. It was a hard lesson learned, and my thoughts are with you.

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

I do not know how I missed this thread, sorry for coming in late on the thread.

I wanted to extend my sympathies and thank you for being so transparent here. I know your story will help many. I’m sure it’s not easy to post so honestly about this. I hope that you will be left with many fond memories of your guy. And an assurance that you have do the right thing.

I hope you have peace in your heart
Warmly
~Kim

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

It seems that you have done your best. I was watching Oprah the other day and she was talking about Forgiveness and how the only time we can forgive ourselves and let go of things is by believing that we have done the best we knew how to during our troubles. You socialized him, you offered him training, you did one on one training, you held a firm hand with him..and to me that sounds like a lot of effort. Perhaps if you hadnt done any of this, Santo wouldnt have been around for 2 years..perhaps something terrible would have happened a year ago..or a year and a half ago.
He will go to doggie heaven =))
Its great that you're doing this..because if he has turned on you chances are..he will turn on anyone..and it is better that he goes with dignity and respect then to go down as a "criminal" an "aggressive dog".
Best of luck to you, and may you raise many great rotties in the future

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

Dear Dara -
Oh my heart is breaking for you and Santo!! As I read your post, I am crying and watching my Alex sleep. I hope I never have to make such a decision. However, if that time were to ever come, I will keep you in mind as my hero, for having the strength and wisdom to do what needs to be done, no matter how painful.
I believe across the bridge, Santo's tortured soul will be at peace. Alex and I will pray that you find that peace, as well.
Elizabeth

You can do a search on the forums about that issue. If you reread the OP's first post you can see the dog's issues went far deeper than just hormones.
