Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

Dana,

Without question, you are the best advocate Santo could ever have. My heart truly goes out to you in your time of need, how difficult this must be for you. You are giving Santo what he needs, and doing so in the face of your own deep anguish over having to make that decision. That is love of the richest kind.

I wish you peace in your decision - it is the right one.

What strength of spirit you have to do the right thing when it is so hard. You, Santo, and your entire family will be in my thoughts and prayers this week.

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

Dana,

Santo will thank you for making the right decision. Once over the Bridge, he will be free of demons and be a much happier boy.

Thank you for respecting your dog and those people he may come into contact with. You have been very brave and I admire you.

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

I know first hand the situation you are in. I was there 3 1/2 years ago, and it still pains me. It is always a very hard decsion to put a loved pet down, especially if you do not see them in physical pain. I was on the phone with my vet for 4 hours asking her and myself, did I do all I could for him. The answer was yes.
I admire someone who has the strenth to do what is right, and what is right to some may not feel right for others, but in your heart you know.
My sympothies go out to you and your family.
Stay strong. And when you help him pass, he feel no longer feel the demons.
Godspeed little guy, and my prayers are with you

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

I am overwhelmed at the responses I have received. I have been devastated over the past month being faced with this, I have lost sleep, have not ate, the whole nine yards. I spoke with only a few close people when making this decsion. I prayed alot, for a sign. When Santo barred his teeth at me.(Sign given) I reached out to someone right here on RDN and (angel at work) she was the unbiased opinion and really put things in perspective. I feel when I reached out to her my decsion was already made, I just needed validation. I am all cried out at the moment and I am just gathering courage from all of you! To see every single person behind me..... I can't describe the strength that gives me, so Thank you for all of your thoughts, they are so deeply appreciated.

Dana

I am so sorry for what you are going thru. I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face. You seemed very commited to Santo and never gave up trying to chase his demons away. I'm hope you will find peace in your decision as he will at the bridge.

"No regrets he went out with dignity" (this was my motto when I lost my first rotti to lymphoma)

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dana, I think everyone else on the board has said it all. You are a brave, loving person. I will keep you and Santo in my prayers. Words can not convey how sad I am for you and Santo. At least he will be free of his demons.

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

Dana, while your loss will be huge, you are not only doing the right thing for Santo, but also for every properly bred dog out there.

It will be hard, but when the time is right, you will be blessed with the dog you are looking for. Santo has taught you alot, and when you are ready, another dog will be blessed by your prior experiences with Santo and Nicco.

You deserve a great dog. What you are doing is painfully the right thing to do. We will be thinking of you.

I am so sad for you. This is one of those times when doing what is right for him, and for you, is just unbearably painful. You and Santo are in my thoughts and prayers.

I can only imagine the pain involved with making this type of decision....
It take great strength to be able to set aside your emotions to see a situation clearly....I am sorry you are faced with this.

Re: 1 bad temperment and several hearts broken

Dana,

I'm so sorry to hear about Santo. It most be so hard to love a dog and still fear him, it is heart breaking. Santo does sound like the Rottweiler of years gone bye the type that die hard working people look for, if you just want to lock your dog up and take him out to work. I talked to a helper that just imported a puppy and this little thing just snarls and snaps and he is very happy with this behavior he said that is why imported this puppy because you can't find serious working lines here in the US. Sometimes we need to be careful of what we ask because you might not know what to do when you get it. I will always believe that a good working dog does not need to be a danger to his family.

Good luck Dana I know hard this must be for you.
