How to help car sickness?

My 2 yr old rottie DOES NOT like to ride in the car. When he was tiny I took him for car rides but when he was about 6 months to a year he started to vomit on all car rides. He has no problem getting in the car but as soon and you approach the end of the street his mouth is dripping like a faucet. I have tried short trips to start and this doesn't seem to help either. He goes to the vet yearly and that is it. I would like to start training classes and take him to the doggie park but not so if I will be cleaning up vomit. Is this something he may grow out of or are we homebound?

Re: No joy rides for us...

I had a mix rott/ausie that would do that, but he was able to go from coast to coast without any trouble when we fed him at night.

Try feeding him after the trip. :)

Re: How to help car sickness?

Yes...try to have an empty stomach or a very light stomach...do not feed a meal before going in the car. A bisquit or two so that the stomach is not completely empty is good.

He associates the car and feeling sick...you must change that. Give him half of adult dosage of Gravol half an hour before leaving. This helps with motion sickness. Once he does not feel sick in the car...he may not need it after a few times giving it.

Make sure he can see out the window and crack the window on the side he is riding. Sometimes just being able to smell fresh air helps alot.

Start with short rides and work your way up to longer rides.

Re: How to help car sickness?

My little guy used to vomit constantly in the car... and its true... they associate the car with feeling sick. One thing I did with Marcino was to make sure that the radio was off, the windows slightly open for fresh air, no sudden braking or sharp turns (I drove very carefully)... and I also spoke softly to him re-assuring him in a soft voice. I also put a couple of his favorite toys in the back seat. He got over it after a few weeks and now we can ride for hours. (An empty stomach does help).

I have also heard of people giving their dogs Gravol (I have not)... you can check with your vet on this... for longer trips :)

Re: How to help car sickness?

One you may like to try is to sit him on 6" of newspapers when in the vehicle.

I had always believed, preventing them seeing out of the windows helps, as the motion of seeing things wizz past unsettles their tums.

Chance would have a problem about an hour into a ride. An empty stomach helps but I give her something I bought in a health food store called Bach Rescue Remedy, it's a natural stress reliever.

Re: How to help car sickness?

Any sort of current ear problems can make your dog nauseous, and prone to vomit. Otherwise, you can give the dog Dramamine (I use 1 chewable) to control the motion sickness. Recommended by my vet acc. to package directions.

Next, be upbeat and cheerful, getting the dog into the car. Try a number of short rides first. Window open just a few inches, and riding on the seat helps. Throw an old absorbant type blanket or towel(s) over the seat for the time being, until the dog is doing better.

Re: How to help car sickness?

Our almost 6 yr old Hannah has never done well in the vehicle. Over the yrs I've tried so many over the counter preps. Now we just let her only have a small portion of food, give her rescue remedy, put on the back seat air. That has worked very well. She might get a bit sloppy...but does not vomit anymore.

Good luck with the classes!!!

Re: How to help car sickness?

My boy use to get sick when riding in the vehicle. Now at 9 months he has grown out of it. My advise only take him in the car an hour or 2 after eating, or better yet before eating.

Re: How to help car sickness?

Teazle was bad too, ever since she was a pup, and still does not like going in the car (she is 2 now). However, I used to drive slowly and carefully round corners, and because up until the age of 12 months, she was in the car nearly every day, she eventually grew out of it, unless we went on long journeys.

Unfortunately she got back in the habit, once the regular drives stopped. The the vet told me to just give her a little bit of food before the journey and not to let her ride on an empty stomach. She then stopped being sick all of a sudden and I can now take her anywhere.

Re: How to help car sickness?

I have used, in the past and since recommended many times..Nux Vomica..a homeopathic remedy, available at a health food store. Get 30C or 30 X. They are little pellets and you give a couple an hour before a car ride, then again 30 minutes before leaviing and that should do it.

Re: How to help car sickness?

I have the same problem with 10 month Jake and we are starting an OB class tonight which is 30 min. from home. If I give him dramamine before going will this affect his alertness or ability in class?

Re: How to help car sickness?

dramamine probably will make him drowsy...but Nux Vomica will not.
