| ALWAYS HUNGRY!
I have a 5 month old rottie. He came down with parvo when he was about three months old. He was very ill for about a week. He is back to his old self now. I'm just wondering if I'm feeding him as often as I should. He lost a lot of weight while he was sick. I feed him three times a day. He gets about 4 cups of dry dog food a day, not including his training treats. He has gained weight steadily since he was sick. I have people ask me if he's been wormed. When it's meal time he acts like he's starving. I don't want to overfeed him either. Do rottie pups go through a stage of growth where it takes them a while to gain weight. Would having parvo effect his growth? For one thing I think he almost grew in height overnight. Any input would be appreciated. |

| If you are feeding him a good brand of dry food, it should tell you on the pacage about the quantity you should feed your dog according to age, weight and excersise. I have a male rotti 9 months. He can eat over 4 times what I give him!!! but what I give him is over enough. Training treats should not be in great enough amounts to be regarded and to make a difference. |

| Our dog had Parvo when she was one year old. She lost 15 kg of her weight. Of course the parvo has effected the growth off your dog. Using all of his energy to get over this terrible virus, which really wears them out. For Rottie pups it's normal to gain weigth very quickly, almost 1 kg a week. However your dog is 5 months, so gaining weigth will take much longer (unless he is been giving to much food of course) My Rottie didn't care for her food at all, untill a had a second dog. So i quess that depens on the dog. It's important to watch his weigth. Most Rotties i know are a bit or very much overweight. Always keep the food you give him in balance with the amount of excercise you give him and put him on a scale to keep track off him gaining or loosing weigth. And when you think he to fat, just give him less, no matter how hungry he looks.... (They can be such actors) Glad your puppy survived Parvo !!! He is a winner now Anton ------------------ [This message has been edited by antonschinkel (edited March 16, 1999).] |
