barking is a training thing. You probably want your dog to bark to let you know that someone is near, but you don't want him to bark non stop. Many people teach their dogs a "no bark" command. When you dog barks, get up and look to see what he's barking at. Tell him good dog and then if he continues to bark you can either say, "enough", or "no bark". If he is really barking hard and doesn't seem to hear you, you can clap your hands or something to get his attention and then repeat the command. My dog picked this up pretty quickly.

it's not that he just sits there and barks, we live on a corner lot and he barks at every single person that walks by. i would settle for just the warning of someone entering the yard. my yard is completely fenced in. i've tried the battery operated collar with the remote control that gives him a little zap. it seemed to work until the batteries died. i know it doesn't harm him, but i was hoping it would have had a longer lasting effect.

What worked for me was: when my dog would start barking, I would immediately call him to me and give him a treat. If his recall isn't reliable, you could use a long line to insure he comes to you. By the time he comes to me and gets treated, whatever he was barking at has usually moved on. Now, when my boy sees someone, he'll bark once or twice then run to the back door for his treat.
