Accidents in new house

We moved into a new house (new to us) about three weeks ago. All the floors on the main level are hardwood. The upstairs has new carpet and pad - same as basement.

Skuly, who has had no issues with using the house as a bathroom since we got her, has urinated on the carpet about 5 times now(2x in basement and 3x upstairs). She is taken out at least four times a day so I don't think that's the issue. She's done it once on the STAIR going up, once in a spot right next to where she hangs out and once in the middle of the hall. The other two were down in the basement the only two times she's been down there. We have banned her from the basement at this point.

Does anyone have any idea on what is going on here?

First off how old is Skuly?

Are you really monitoring her closely, and using a crate to assist in the housebreaking? Is she being taken out immediately after eating?

Did the previous owners of the home have animals?

Being that you also had new home growling issues I would do 2 things. One I would do a vet checkup just to make sure all is well in the health department, then I would take this dog back to the basics of learning her manners, even in potty training. Sometimes they need a swift reminder of their status in new enviroments......

It is not housebreaking, it is marking territory but is handled the same way. Total supervision or crate when she cannot be supervised. Restrict her until she understands - that neans one room at a time mastered.

We had the same problem with Paradise when we moved into our brand new house in March (thankfully she only used the unfinished basement), I agree with Judi W "she is marking her territory". We went back to basics, crate and total supervision. The problem was resolved within a month. Good luck and be persistant.

Troy - Skuly is four and house trained.

Burns, Judi and Michele - It looked to me like marking at first. What threw me off was her doing it on the stair. I thought that possibly she was having bladder issues or why else would she pee midway up the staircase. The growling is pretty much gone. I guess she's moved on to other tactics. We caught her last night and gave her hell.

My plan of action will be to take her to the vet this week for a checkup and to have her shadow me ALL day. HOw long do you think that should go on? I have her in my room when I am gone. She has never marked in our room.

I'd keep restricting her to only being in areas I am in until I was darn good and sure that you've made an indelible impression on her about how you feel about her pissing in your home. Explain to her that if you want this new home marked, you will do it yourself - and probably use paint!

Hey Judi,

She's not to pleased about how everytime she starts to mosey on out of the room, I call her back.
I used that enzyme spray on the carpet but I'm not sure how good that stuff is at getting the smell out. She stopped at one of her spots today and I told her to "move" and we kept on going.

Yeah, don't totally buy into the must be some smell left over rumor that dogs spread in order to justify pissing in the house. There was no doggy pee smells before she started putting them there! She's trying to sneak out of the room to mark again. Stay on her case for a while.

seeing as this dog is 4, I dont believe that would work. Plus that method is quite antiquated and not really used anymore. Follow the other advice posted here...please.

Chelsea - Potty training is not the issue here.

Beth - Skuly is either locked in my bedroom when I am not here or I make her follow me around. She's not allowed to go off on her own. We'll see how that works over the next couple of weeks.
