I haven't had this happen before, but...I think even housebroken dogs are so overrun by the scent of all the other dogs and numerous 'markings' throughout the pet store. They just follow suit and mark it themselves. Sort of like two dogs following eachother around a field peeing on all the same trees. If you look closely around a big petstore you can find evidence of past markings everywhere!

Although he was "just being a dog" he did it because he could, because you were not alert enough and paying attention to him to correct him for even thinking about it. Doesn't matter whether other dogs have left smells in there or not. I hope you reported it to the store so it could be cleaned up. I find nothing more irritating than to reach for a package and find it sticky with piss, or to see a pool of yellow on the floor of a store. Yes, I take my dogs in and yes, I watch them and if I'm going to be looking at something I put them in a down so they are planted and not given any options.

Well, now you know, and so next time you are going to be ready to let him know that regardless of smells, he is to behave like a gentleman and not treat the store like a toilet.
