Housebreaking problem

Jake is 7-9 months and has been with us for 3 wks. We started housebreaking immediately, although it appeared to be just a refresher. In the 3 wks he has had few accidents and they were limited to urinating. Until yesterday. Yesterday he pooped in the house and since I didn't see him do it I did not scold him. This morning I took him for a long walk, came home and I went into the bathroom, when I came out he had pooped twice on the carpet. Again I didn't catch him, but I did show him and say NO NO and take him outside. What I don't understand is after 3 wks of not doing this, what would cause him to suddenly start? Last night he would not eat dinner and this morning he ate only 1/2 his breakfast. He is eating treats and everything else that he can sink his teeth into, flowers, grass, weeds. I'm wondering if these two things are related, not sure what to do

I take him out everytime I think he is signaling me that he needs to go out and to tell the truth I think he is just playing me now.

has he been to the vet for a check up? It may just be a case of the honeymoon being over so now he is testing what he can get away with. But I would make sure to rule out anything medically wrong as well to be safe. Try crating him when you can not be in direct eye sight of him so he doesn't have the opportunity to have any mistakes...then when he goes outside praise him like he just won the lottery. Its pretty hard to reinforce that something is bad if you do not catch him in the act so limit the amount of times he can "get away with it" and use positive reinforcement of the good behaviour.

I would take him to the vet and have an urinalysis run. If he is peeing in his crate he may have a bladder infection...

I agree.
Anytime a dog is not behaving the usual way in the house and having accidents...the first stop would be the vets office.
It could be a medical issue.
