I need some advice....PLEASE

Hello all, This is my first post here and by reading the other posts I hope to get some great advice.
Ok here goes... I have an 8 yr old intact male rottie whom we have had since he was 14 weeks old. When we got him my oldest son was 1 yr old we went to training classes and everything he seemed like the perfect dog, Then I had another son 4 yrs ago and ever since Bagheera (the rottie) has gone well...weird. He pees on eveything that my 4 yr old has touched outside. Like one day after getting out of the pool my son sat on the steps when we let the dog out he immediatly peed when Nickolas had sat. Also if the dog is let to be loose in the house he goes right for my youngest sons bed and pees on it. He really doesnt pee on anything else. I cant stand him peeing and feel bad for locking him in the kitchen but I don't know where to turn. The other problem we have is he humps everything in sight! People kids animals anything. We have bred him 2 times when he was younger and now vets are tellling us hes too old to fix. And also if I can find a vet to fix him the are telling me that the humping will not go away as he is set in his ways. The humping is getting bad..the other night he got out of the yard and was loose for about 1 hour when my sister in law found him she brought him back home where he proceded to knock her to the ground(hurting her leg) and trying to have his way with her. We are at our ends we really don't want to get rid of him but we want to be happy with him and him happy to be here with us. Any advice GREATLY appreciated! Thanks Sue!

First of all, he is not too old to be neutered. That is balderdash.

Secondly, although he might have had some training when young, if you don't keep the training up throughout life, you are doing your dog a disservice. Get him back in a training class. He needs retraining and daily sessions and he should be seriously corrected for any peeing in the house and really have some consequences of daring to hump people. When he is in the house, have him dragging a leash, hang something that makes noise on his collar so you can hear every time he moves and watch him like a hawk. When you see him siddle up to something, grab that leash and give him a good correction and a real verbal tongue lashing. Close the door to your little one's bedroom so he doesn't have access to it. You must do this everytime. That same leash and collar allows you to give him what for if he should even think about mounting someone.

Please put locks on your yard gates so that he cannot get out.

Thanks..Yes we do have locks on the gate but that night in question there was a miscommunication between my husband and me. Hubby went out on his Harley and I assumed he locked it. About the training... where do I go? The local petsmart or a private place? What is best? Thanks for putting up with me! Sue

You will have an obedience training club in your area. Go to the following link, do a search for clubs in Ohio and find an obedience club in the Cleveland area.

Many rescue dogs are this age or older and are spayed/neutered. Find another vet if your vet does not want to neuter him. It is true..if it has become a bad habit, the humping and peeing may not go away completely. But with neutering, training and some behaviour modification he should be alot easier to live with.

Also...the possibility of re-homing an intact 8 year old male that pisses on everything and humps is going to be impossible. Who would want a dog like that?????

Forget about Petsmart training...you need someone to come to the house and evaluate him or get some one-on-one training. Where are you located?
There may be some members that can guide you to a good trainer.

Sounds like this dog has taken over the house and is running the show. The first time he tried humping anyone he should have had the crap scared out of him. If some dog of mine tried to hump me or a family member , I can tell you he would have seen stars.

We did try and scare him but it obviously didn't work. He is a big boy about 125 pounds and pure dumb. He does't piss on everything just what my 4 yr old has touched OUTSIDE and he does piss on his bed in the house thats all (which is enough) I am located in Cleveland Ohio. Anyone knows of a good trainer please let me know. Thanks again! Sue

I gave you a link. If you want private training, you will still get a better referral from a training club than most other places.

Put a leash on him - as soon as he even THINKS about sniffing something inappropriate to pee on, correct him! Use a loud voice and say "AH AHH!" and redirect him to something OUTSIDE that he can relieve himself on, and PRAISE him when he does so.

As for neutering him at 8 years old...get it done...humping is often not a sexual behavior, but a dominant behavior, as is marking.

Get back into classes ASAP...it is never too late to learn (or refresh ones memory!).

Dogs humping anyone or anything is NEVER tolerated here. It's incredibly rude.

Also, to make it easier for you - here is the info from the link Judi referred to - we can't make it any easier than that - I took out the 'breed specific' clubs - this is all breed clubs There are TWO Rottie specific clubs - maybe contact them to see if they know of anyone close to you.

Cleveland All breeds is very good. I don't know where you are exactly, but I know a very good trainer near Oberlin who has a lot of experience w/ Rotties and is very NO-Nonsense, if you think Cleveland all breeds is to far,,,
