Talking Chewing

Can someone explain how to stop a 10 month old from chewing everything he can reach??? Whenever I turn my back on him, he chews up whatever he can find!!!! I do offer him a toy in return but that don't help!!!!!So after several of damaged plants, toilet paper rolls, socks, shoes, leashes........I need tips. So far the only choice I have is to put him in his Grate when I have to do something and can't keep a steady Eye on him.

So I am greatful for any tip I (maybe others too) can get......!!!

Thank you

Re: Chewing

No one is allowed to roam my house until they can be trusted not to destroy. We used a crate and a leash to start with. I also sprayed just about everything with bitter apple. LOL I also learned that if I leave things around, ie shoes, socks, laundry, it will get dragged around the house. The only way that I can be sure that the beasts will not get into stuff is to have things like bones and great toys for them to chew on and nothing is left out.
All of that sad, please remember that I have a dog called Chewie. He must have been called that for a reason, because thats what he does best.

Re: Chewing

It sounds to me like this pup is bored, and knows exactly what to do to get your attention! And it's certainly working! Is he in Obedience classes? If not, get him enrolled and start training. If he's acting out like this now, it's only going to escalate as he gets older, and that can be very problematic with a strong breed like ours. Training isn't optional with the Rottweiler, it's mandatory!
Get this young one in classes now and you'll never stop thanking yourself! The pay-off is a well-behaved, well-adjusted companion that you'll be proud of!

Re: Chewing

Trust me I know the breed (Argus is my 3rd Rott) yes he may be bored, but that is not an excuse!!! I am bored too sometimes. He passed all his classes. I don't leave stuff laying around unless he has access to my Son's Room (which is another story, typical Teenager), but he is smart he even know how too open the cabinets...........(which reminds me, kiddie locks )

The pay-off is a well-behaved, well-adjusted companion that you'll be proud of! <<<<<< He is and I am proud of him, we just have this small minor problem which somehow we get under control too!!!!

Re: Chewing

You said "he passed all his classes". Well I started in classes when my girl
was 4 months old. She'll be 5 yrs old in April and we still train.
Get in another Obed class; introduce him to other activities like Herding or Tracking or Agility, etc. No matter what you decide to pursue, Obedience is the bottom line for anything to follow. It's the foundation from which we build our dogs! Keep him in-training and he'll be too tired to get into mischief! Good luck!

Re: Chewing

Micky... I'm having the same problem as you are right now. Not with Casey, but our new chihuahua, Nico. I'm assuming he is bored, but Casey seems to be keeping him busy. Bitter Apple never worked with my Rottie, he actually seemed to like the taste, I don't know. I want to come over and visit, is your boy more accepting of people now? I have to show you our new fur baby. I'm going to take Nico on walks and take him to parks to see if that solves his chewing problem. Good luck with yours gaaaalllll...
