Help with locking jaws

Diesel KNOWS out and drop it/leave it commands very well.

Occasionally when he gets hold of something and does not want to let go, he will lock his jaws. I think this has happened twice. I need to know what I should do if there is a next time. The last time he locked he had a wrapped mini snickers in his mouth.

What I do now is get him a treat and persuade him into letting go whatever is in his mouth. I have tried prying his mouth open. Should I be doing something else.

Thanks in Advance.

Re: Help with locking jaws

Put some spit from your own mouth on your finger and wipe it on his nose. He will have to open his mouth and lick his nose (they cannot ignore this). When he does so, say the word "ooout" "gooooood dog" and get whatever it is.

Re: Help with locking jaws

PS the jaws are not locked, they are simply clenched.

LOL! That is hysterical.

I'll be filing that away in case I need it someday. Julius is always willing to spit things out...but there may come a day where he finds something that is just too precious to let go of....

Did you think of this yourself, Judi? I'm just picturing your devising certain ways of getting dogs to "drop it" & finally you found that wiping spit on their nose worked!

Re: Help with locking jaws

I had a very very tough and wonderful bitch that when tiny would give me hard eye contact and tell me she would die before submitting. Unless I was going to do her an injury or kill her dead, I had to invent some clever ways of working with her. I invented the spit thing (didn't bother putting it on my finger, just gave her a big old very spitt filled lick on her nose.). She thought that was an absolute hoot and that is how I taught her the out. She lived to be over 13 and all her life, every once in a while just for fun we'd do it. Tickled her no end.

Re: Help with locking jaws

I wish I would have known to spit on my dog last night. He found something as I took him on his before bed walk and was not dropping it. Now I know spit on my dog

How funny!

I may just have to try this with Julius for the heck of it. Ryan will really think that I'm nuts!

WOW! - Would this have worked with the dear departed avian friend? What is to keep them from swallowing before licking?

Re: Help with locking jaws

Awesome trick! I can't wait to try it!

Ha! I am convinced dogs (or any living creature!) don't "always" do anything!

Nice to have a neat little trick up the sleeve!

My thoughts exactly!

I just had an incident on our walk today that I had to stop and pry my dog's mouth open. We were passing by a convenience store and apparantly someone had dropped a twinkie or a piece of cake. I didn't see it but Sonny did!

From a nice heel he swooped his head down so fast to snatch it up that I had no idea what was in his mouth (I wasn't even sure anything was even in his mouth since he continued to walk without chewing). When I said "Drop It" and he looked a little sheepish I knew something was in there.

I had to pry his mouth and shake his head to get it to fall out. He wasn't expecting that as he gave a whimper as I pried his mouth open quickly and shook his head from side to side. Maybe he'll think twice next time. But I do know this...I will be trying Judi's trick!
