no muzzle for boris

tonight while working on boris' nails, I was so impressed by him. He tried very hard to get away, but never tried to snap or bite. He would press against me between feet. hilda whined, bit and snapped at the dremmel. (I gave her a few touch ups so she wouldn't feel left out. )

WTG Boris!!! What a relief for you that the muzzle wasn't needed and the nails were clipped with not much fuss.

Post Re: no muzzle for boris

Glad to hear that Boris behaved and got his nails cut.
Not sure why people have this thing against muzzles.
Muzzles are a great tool, they keep the dogs mind on something else while you cut their nails....and often worry so much about having the muzzle on...that they forget you are cutting their nails.
A twich is used on a horse for this reason...keeps their mind of it and not on the procedure being done.

For anyone having a hard time cutting nails on their dog I really would recommend a muzzle...even if the dog is not snapping or growling. Eventually you may not need to use it....just while the dog is learning to have it's nails cut weekly.

I don't need to muzzle my own dogs to clip nails...we do them once a week with no fuss or muss...but I have muzzled foster dogs and always managed to clip their nails by myself or even take out stitches.

Re: no muzzle for boris

Good for him. Keep it up. All dogs are dremeled, here. We started with giving dried liver treats for every few nails done, then stretched it out to each foot, etc. Now they get a nice long lasting high value treat for the whole proceedure...a greenie, small marrow bone...etc.

We don't own a muzzle, but then I don't do strange dog nails either. Been around horses all my younger life. Nothing wrong with distraction.

Re: no muzzle for boris

as upset as he was, biting just didn't seem to occur to him as a way to stop me. Hilda seriously considered biting, that's why I muzzled her and will continue to whenever we do nails.

Re: no muzzle for boris

I've told you from the beginning he was a good dog!!!!! Not a weenie.

Horses aren't "distracted" by the twitch, they are pretty well helpless because their lip is held by a twisted chain.

Re: no muzzle for boris

After we got Mocha and started doing her nails a muzzle was a non-negotiable tool. Now she gets her nails done like a pro...snip snip snip done!! No muss no fuss no muzzle. Time and lots of praise may eventually wear her down so you don't need it, as was our case.
