Talking Rottweiler constantly attacks Pug

Hello Everybody!

For the quick start let me introduce ourself, my name is Dean and me and my girlfriend have one year old female pug named Lori. Last week we were joined by 3 months old female rottweiler Tasha.

Now, the problem is that even after one week of living together Tasha still takes every opportunity to attack Lori. Attacks are not hard, but imagine big rotty and small pug. You will understand that accident can happen anytime. Tasha is otherwise very calm, friendly with me and my girlfriend and don't take a long time to understand a command, except were Lori is in question, then every "No" and "Bad Dog" don't do a thing.

Did I made a mistake bringing a rotty in the house? Or is there any way to solve this "issue" between Lori and Tasha?

I would really appreciate any suggestion as I really don't know how to move forward, since Tasha is really excellent and we love her already and don't want to give it to someone else, just because of Lori.

Thanks, Dean.

PS: English is not my first language, so please accept my apologies for any mistakes in upper text.

Are these playful attacks or aggressive outright attacks?

Your mistake was probably bringing in another female. The fact your Rott is only 3 months old and is already showing aggression towards an older female (If that is what it really is and not puppy play)that has been there a lot longer I say you better start off with some obedience asap. I have a feeling you may have your work cut out for you.....

If you are already questioning if you made a mistake or if this is something you are going to be able to manage safely I would rethink the situation and possible return the Rottweiler to the breeder or rehome her while she is still a cute pup.

Your pug will not stand a chance as this dog will become a whole lot bigger!!!!

Re: Rottweiler constantly attacks Pug

Are you sure that she is attacking her and not just playing? Puppies are VERY playful and what may look like an attack to us may just be playfulness on the part of your puppy.

When I brought Akasha home at 8 weeks she did tried everything possible to get our little 6 pound poodle/brussels x to play with her. It took a while but Brylee eventually started playing with Akasha. She even let Akasha drag her around by the tail, (which we did put a stop to) since Akasha had never seen a tail before I am sure she was fascinated
Brylee would let Akasha know when she had enough of her puppy antics and Akasha would eventually back off. To this day Brylee rules the roost and bosses those big ol rotties around. They don't even think about questioning her

A dog the size of a Rottweiler can hurt a Pug just playing.

2 females is almost never a good idea. A 15 lb dog and a (potentially) 90 lb dog may not be the best playmates for each other, altho many keep small and large dogs together just fine. It is a situation that will ALWAYS require careful monitoring in my opinion.

Re: Rottweiler constantly attacks Pug

Pugs do not know how to back down and if you do not get control of this situation in a hurry your pug is going to end up badly hurt or worse. Girls when they fight are going to try to kill one another and your pug will not stand a chance against your rottweiler. I would never never leave them unattended together and be very careful when they are together. I would never personally have a female rottweiler in the same house as my very bossy female pug. Our male rottweiler was taught from an early age the pugs are not toys and are MINE. He is very good with them but is never left unattended with them either.

Re: Rottweiler constantly attacks Pug

During Sarge's puppy obedience a pug well pinned him down. I was laughing so hard about it. It took us so long to get Sarge to play with other puppies that when he allowed the pug to play fight with him I thought it was wonderful.
However they never became rough with each other and even with smaller dogs Sarge would lay down for them to "fight" him. He would do this with one of my firiends beagle/jack russell puppy who was 5 inches if that fought with him.
I would start obedience classes and do not ever leave these two dogs alone.

Re: Rottweiler constantly attacks Pug

A 3 month old pup is most likely still in play mode. And who can "blame" a pup for wanting to play? Still she needs guidance as to what is and is not acceptable. In the instance that play gets out of hand, someone best step in. If nipping is too hard, stop it. Even divert both their attention to a toy or a game of tug.

Pups are not born knowing how much is too much. They need to learn. At the moment I have a 11 week old pup, Raven, as rambunctious and frenzied as any pup can get. Sometimes she's "too much" even for my very patient 3 year old female...who simply removes herself to a higher level or holds her down, briefly.

Still, at some point I have to decide, "OK she's out of control." Maybe she's attatched herself to a jowl or wants to chew on an ear. That's not acceptable! Sable doesn't deserve a little "Klingon" dangling off her face or chomping on an ear. I may bring a tug toy and get them to tug, or I may toss a ball so the pup will chase. I've even just removed her for a time out, or had DH take Sable for a walk, intil the pup was calm.

BTW: Your English is great! Get the pup into obedience soon, 4-5 months is a good time to start. Has the pug had obedience? You could do it together! Ask Montanna Rott. Pugs and Rotties can work, but YOU need to be in charge! And I have a Cocker Spaniel in my brood. Size is not a factor in being well trained.

Since dogs speak "dog" better than people, in order to evaluate what is going on, you need to observe what the Pug has to say about this rough puppy. The Pug will object strongly if the pup is too rough and that is how the pup will learn when its attentions are not appreciated.

I am sorry to see that the pup is gone, but glad you were able to make a decision for you and your family. You were responsible and I congratulate you on that. Take care!
