Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

My boys have all been so tolerant of puppies that have been added to the mix and my current situation with a 4 month old pup is not any different. The girls will not put up with "Hattie's antics",and will put her in her place but my male, Ace, will let her do anything that she wants. Consequently Ace has all sorts of scabs and sores from her bitting on him. I always feel like I need to step in and stop her from chewing on him, but really, she weighs @ 40 lbs and he is around 125 lbs. I guess when he gets really tired of her he will put an end to it. For now he will be known as " Saint Acer".

Sounds like my household with my parents while growing up! I think I read here on the forums before that often males tend to be more forgiving than the females (if I remember correctly?). I wonder if this is the norm or it just depends on the dog?

Poor Ace though, getting beat up by a little puppy!

Re: Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

When my pup plays with my friends adult Rotti, Zeke is more tolerant than the female another friend has, but not as tolerant as your describing. He still puts him in his place if he's biting too hard, or if he's had enough (of tug or whatever they're playing). Sheena on the other hand hates being annoyed, and got in a barking match the last time with my little guy who was acting ballsy from under the chair. "Ooooohhh, tough guy barking at SHeena from under your protective barriers of the chair legs!" lol

Re: Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

males are usually tolerant until the pup reaches maturity.. then they are alot rougher.

that is when the possibility for same-sex-aggression will pop up, so be watchful

Re: Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

Unless he has a mental defect, males should be totally tolerant of babies and bitches. They might grumble and complain, but will never injure either.

Just make sure you keep any cuts on the old boy clean. A little Neosporin does a wonderful job. I have a tube for us and one for the dogs.

Re: Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

Max too has been wonderful with Luna. She has used him as a big chew toy, she takes his bones and toys, she eats from his food bowl, and he puts up with every bit of it without so much as a grumble. She has been teething pretty heavily the last few weeks and his latest act of "mothering" has been to licks her gums, sort of like a doggie french kiss. It's really kind of gross, but she seems to like it. I swear he has been a better "momma" to her than any bitch ever could be.

Re: Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

Our boy is much more tolerant with puppies than our girl is. I love to watch Keil playing with puppies. He lays down and gets on their level to play with them. He is so gentle and so patient with them. He is fascinated with puppies and and really enjoys playing with them. When we were taking our last obedience class, there was a puppy class immediately following our class. When the puppies would come in at the end of our class my daughter had to work 10x as hard to keep him focused and working. He lost all concentration and wanted to go visit with the puppies. He would ignore any adult dogs that came in, but he just loved those puppies

We had a male Rottie who did NOT like any other dogs, puppies included. When he was three he attacked our 10 week old puppy, thankfully no serious injuries were sustained. He definately had a "mental defect" as Judi mentioned.

Re: Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

When we got Sadie at 5wks old (a rescue) my boy Chaos was way more gentle and tolerant than my girl Iris. He would play with her and they even slept together it was so sweet. Iris would "accidentally" step on her and Chaos would come running to save her. Iris would jump up like she had been bitten if Sadie ever tried to cuddle with her. Recentally Sadie got Parvo and she was at the vets for a few days, Chaos wouldnt eat and he was depressed untill she came home. Iris wasnt affected by it though, but then she wouldnt miss a meal for anything and she is always WAY to happy to get depressed.

Re: Male Rotts so tolerant of pups

My boy Bowden (we are a FSU Seminole family) takes all the abuse that my 14 month old female, Mercedes, can dish out. He is the sweetest boy when it comes to her. He is 135lbs and never gets aggressive towards her no matter how rough she is (and she is a firecracker at 100lbs+ already). Bowden know he is in control and therefore doesn't need to exercise agression. He is already the same with my Pit rescue and was so immediately

Baileys dad is such a softie with all of his kids, he lets them get away with everything. His mum is quite forgiving too but is sure to let them know whats what.

Have any of you found this to be true with human kids too? Are the males a bit more tolerant?
