Unhappy puppy growling when taking chicken away!?

My 11 week old have never done this and I am very concerned. I gave him a frozen wing and he went to eat it in the living room. I wanted him to go outside with it so I went to take it and have him go outside and he growled and lunged at me. I told him no and took it from him and then put it down and let him have it and then took it again. I told him good boy and gave it back. I also had my sons give it and take it back. Well he was fine with the 16 year old and lunged at the 9 year old, growling. So I got his crate and knew he was busted,he got in it himself! I will not have anything that i cant take from him, or anyone else in the family, supervised ofcourse. What did I do wrong and what do I do to stop it from happening again? Dont give them to him? Make it a crate food? Making it a crate food solves the problem but I dont want him thinking he can do that to any of us. Thanks!

Re: puppy growling when taking chicken away!?

by giving it and taking it away over and over you have just taught him that he needs to worry about you taking his possessions and that he must guard them.... dogs become food and possesion aggressive because they are afraid of you taking it away... i practice with toys by giving the out command and a trade for the item they have..... i would never take away a food item that i have given them it simply isnt fair and imop if you wanted him to eat it out side then thats where you should have given it to him...i would feed him some by hand and reach down and give him extra treats while he is eating but DONT TAKE THE FOOD YOU HAVE GIVEN HIM AWAY FROM HIM.....

Yep,
practice the out commands, drop it release or whichever you choose. Trade treats for items. SOmetimes you will have to increase the treat and make it extra special to get what your pup has in it's mouth. I made the same mistake by trying to take things from Jango. He started to become possessive of his things or treasures. When I learned to trade item for item things get so much easier. Larry hit it right on the button.

Re: puppy growling when taking chicken away!?

But what made him afraid in the 1st place? If I keep giving it back to him wont that show him not to be afraid that he wont get it back? The bottom line is he should never be growling in that way to any of us, right? Nothing he has ever had has waranted this response. As in he doesnt like anything this much I guess. So now what do I do? How do I fix it now? Practice with toys? He wont care that I am taking them.

Re: puppy growling when taking chicken away!?

We do the same thing as Larry. Julius is given his food outside (weather permitting) in his locked, fenced in area. We don't bother him while he is eating. Like Larry, we will walk by & drop something yummy in his bowl but will not take the bowl away. The same thing goes for his raw marrow bones. He's actually outside right now gnawing on one.

I would say either give him the chicken wing & give him a safe place to eat it or just don't give the chicken wing at all.

It's raw meat & he'll be a bit protective over it. Julius eats a raw diet & usually waits until we go inside to eat. I don't mind that from my dog. He's eating & he doesn't want to be bothered. I don't like to be bothered either when I'm eating....

I don't think there is anything that you should to fix it. Just give him peace & quiet when he's eating. Also teach him a solid "drop it" or "out". When we need to bring Julius in we go to his fenced in area & tell him to drop it & he does.

SO I should have brought something he likes better? WE havent worked on any commands like that yet, hes not in class yet. We do come and sit. I guess it took me by surprise. I never knew he liked the chicken wings that well. I have normally always given them to him outside. Not sure what made me give it to him inside this time. Thanks.

Yes...he won't be interested in a trade unless what you are offering is as good or better than what you are asking him to relinquish.

Yes, we did this with Julius as well. His food that he would do anything for (& still will) is cheese. He can have a marrow bone in his mouth & he'll drop it if he sees that I have cheese.

Re: puppy growling when taking chicken away!?

So, now that I know that I could get this response, I could try and trade with him if I ever needed to take it? Or am I never allowed to get raw back from him? Sorry guys for all the questions. I just dont want to have undo my mistake later on. I want to get it right from the jump and I already blew the 1st step.

Yeah, you could try the trade if you had to but it's better just to leave him alone with it. But once he has a solid "drop it", he should drop whatever is in his mouth. Julius will now without me having a piece of cheese in my hand. He knows what it means & although he might "drop it" a bit slower he still does.

Good luck!
