Jean Donaldson book about resource guarding?

I didnt want to Hijack the thread about resource Guarding so I thought I would start another thread to ask about this - Has anyone read Mine! A Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs by Jean Donaldson
The name sounds familiar but I dont know where I have heard it before.

I only have a problem with resource Guarding when it comes to Greenies. Other then that we have NO problems with Harley or wolf guarding anything. I was doing a little bit of research on the net about it and came across this website: http://www.charleszukow.com/download...ldson_book.pdf

Cynthia---

I haven't personally read it (read "Culture Clash" though) but one of the women in our training class has resource guarding issues with her Border Collie. She said that the book helped her tremendously & gave her some wonderful insight.

Re: Jean Donaldson book about resource guarding?

Well, I finished about 3/4 of the book before I started reading another book. It's a great resource if you have a dog with resource guarding issues. Hercules no longer guards anything with me - just strangers (bones and balls ) so I have no idea how I'm supposed to use the tools! I did find that the book was written in the perspective of you being the trainer assisting another person (if I remember correctly) which made it a little difficult to follow for a newbie such as myself, but the advice was great.

Mine is an outstanding book and IMO should be required reading for EVERY rottweiler owner out there. If nothing else it gives you the tools to help your dog learn to love sharing and if you already have a problem it gives you the steps you need to work through it.

I can't say enough good things about it!

Actually if you have a dog that only guards from strangers, you should enlist a trainer or instructor to start some easy trades. This would involve teaching your dog to give up a not so appealling item (maybe the most boring toy in the house or a stick the dog really doesn't care for) to the "stranger" in exchange for an awesome treat the dog loves.

Gradually introduce slightly more desirable items the dog must exhange for. The key here is to take it very slow and build the trading skill with strangers.

It's pretty much the same protocol, but the "stranger" does the trading etc...

Re: Jean Donaldson book about resource guarding?

Hmmm Thanks! I will have to get the book then! Like I said he does FINe with food, toys, balls, ect its JUST greenies. I havent tried to take his bone away from him yet, nor will I try until I have the book and have read it. Normally in order to take it away from him all I have to do is open the door to the crate. He comes flying out and I grab the bone no Prob! hehehe

Re: Jean Donaldson book about resource guarding?

A very good book.

Every puppy buyer of mine gets Jean Donaldson's "Mine" and "Culture Clash" Plus Ian Dunbar's "After you get your puppy". I send them these at some point BEFORE they get the pup home, so they have plenty of time to read :)
