Weird Behavior

I was outside mowing the lawn. Squeak came up barked at the lawn mower and tried to attack it. When that didn't work she came over and tugged on my pants trying to pull me away from the thing. How do I show her it's not going to hurt her or me?? I am lost on this one. She attacks the broom, vaccuum, and mop also but she has never tried to pull me away from them.

Re: Weird Behavior

Well, mainly I would say do not have a child or dog around when mowing the lawn for sure. Lawn mowers can throw a stone or some such and really cause an injury.

As far as the other stuff goes, my dogs when youngsters all have a great game of chasing the cleaning tools. If it gets to be too much of a pain in the butt to me, I put them in another room. They all rather liked to take hold of the vacuum and bang it up and down when I'm trying to use it.

Re: Weird Behavior

Julius used to attack the broom but now he doesn't mind it as much. Just wanders into the other room.

The snow shovel on the other hand it fair game. I think he wants to help shovel. We just put him in his crate when he gets to be too much.

Re: Weird Behavior

Harley is the same. Brooms, mops, vacuum, lawn mower, and us playing hockey with the kids ALL got her going. She would attack the first things mentioned (viciously) teeth flying everywhere, and would bark like crazy at us playing hockey.

Last night I had had enough. I left the game to do some sit, down, stays with her for about 15 minutes, with treats. Then I made her stay while I joined back in the game. She stayed, but she still barked like a fool. I stopped and went right up in her face (while she is still barking) and said enough! (she knows that command) And damned if she didn't stop, and just lay there and wait for us to be finished our game. I was so happy, and proud of her!!! Finally a peaceful game of hockey, and that's all it took. Usually I give her a chance to behave, and if she barks I take her in the house. She wasn't getting the picture...so I'm so glad this worked!

Re: Weird Behavior

My friends 3 yr old Rottie doesn't like me swinging on a swingset. He's freaky about it! As I'm swinging he darts in front of me, so I have to hop off, cuz I'd barrel into him otherwise. Barks, and grabs my leg at the calf or at the knee, and pulls hard. It hurts, but he's not biting, he just really doesn't want me on the swing. I think he fears for my safety, doesn't understand it. And we know how Rotties think they take care of you, not you of them. I think its sweet.

I just think anything they don't understand, they fear. Lawnmowers are noisy, and wierd to them. Sweeping with a broom, they don't get that we "clean", plus chasing something that swings back and forth is fun.

The funniest, is watching him chase the dirt bike around the track! Atleast he gets his excercise!

Re: Weird Behavior

Well, I don't mow the grass with the dogs outside, first of all. But Rocco once flipped out at the neighbor's lawn mower that they left sitting in their yard. What a stooge! He's obsessed with brooms and Perle's obsessed with the ironing board. They're such goobers!

Re: Weird Behavior

My puppy attacks the mop. And I never finish mopping with her attached to it, I get the giggles so loud the neighbors just know I am rottie mopping.

I bought her a mop monkey toy to distract her but she just loves playing attack the mop.

Re: Weird Behavior

My big girl Sheba just loves going after the mower when I start it. So much as she will bite the front tire and pull on it and move the mower from the path I was on. She also likes going after the broom , vacc, ect. She is just playing with me I think. Sometimes after I am done doing my work, I chase her around with whatever it is I was using and just laugh. She is such a great dog....

I have to bring Hercules in the house whenever my neighbor is out cutting/weed whipping his grass. Hercules goes bannanas! He just hates any kind of loud power equipment. You should see the display he puts on when my lawn service comes to the house. You'd think he was seeing aliens land in his own backyard or something!

Re: Weird Behavior

I'm so glad I'm not alone!

Broom, vaccum, mop, floor scrubber, carpet scrubber, lawn wagon, and dolly....my pups are convinced these are items sent to earth by the Satan of Dog World worthy of an attack to protect us from these vicious, evil things.

Never had the lawn mover to worry about, we keep the dogs inside as my husband does the yard.

Noise from power equiptment, cars, trucks, motorcycle, etc does not seem to affect them, either.
