Talking I was just wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this before?

Hi i'm kinda new here,i have a problem w/ my 5 yr old female rott. She has always had a problem w/ cats, but she has never killed onse until now. This was a cat she was raised with, she has since attacked but not killed another cat. Also a cat she was raised with. She has never had a real problem until last year when we lost our 8 yr old male to cancer. Before then she would lung and growl but never attacked.
I guess what i am asking is,has anyone ellse ever had a problem with this, and if you have did you break them of it,and how.
I dont know what to do with her she has been through obedience classes and passed w/ flying colors. She does listen very well, has never had any problems w/ strangers, other dogs, strange dogs.
Any comments and help would be greatly appreciated,i am at the end.I dont want her to become a statistic.

Well, if you don't have any cats left, I would suggest that you not acquire more. (no, I don't have a solution for you). Cats are simply not safe with some dogs. One of my three would be one of those dogs. I would not consider having a cat with him. He is a kind dog, sheep and lambs are safe, all dogs of any size shape or color are safe and even birds are safe, but a cat would not be.

PS,
The other solution is to have the cat(s) separated from the dog - always.

Did you have the cat or rotti's first in the house?

I had the cats, then i got her.My male was the first dog in the house. He never had a problem w/ any animal.I do have 2 cats left, the one she has tried to grab before, but she doesn't act as though he is there lately. And it seems as though she only tries after they have been outside. We have done a refresher on the obedience and she still has a problem.

I would definately keep what cats you have left away from your girl. As Judi mentioned if you no longer have any cats, please do not get any more.

When I was growing up my sister and I each had a male lab/husky/shepard x. Our dogs were litter mates and they both hated cats. Our dogs were kept in a run that went into one of the stalls in our barn. One night our barn cat went into the dogs stall and the dogs killed her. It was horrible to walk out there and find her dead. Unfortunately this was not the last cat they killed. A neighbors cat came into our fenced yard where the dogs were playing and they caught and killed it.

Some dogs just can't be around cats.

If it only happens after the cats have been out roaming, then keep them in. The neighbors would probably appreciate that as well.

I agree with Luvs that some dogs just don't like cats or can't be around them. We got our rotti first and then a couple of months later our cat. They get along great maybe because they have had to grow up together I guess that makes a difference. Actually the cat runs our rotti I'm pretty sure he would never do anything to hurt her. He gets mad at us when we clip her nails he thinks we are hurting her. Good Luck!

Re: I was just wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this before?

I do have a cat but also know my dogs have limits. I would never leave the house and let all animals room free together.
This might sound cruel to some but my cat has a walk in closet he pretty much lives in by his choice. I do have a new dog that did try and snatch him once so he is always on leash if bubby is loose.
A stray cat in my yard is a dead cat.
My sister was very upset that her two dogs killed their cat, a cat that had grown up there and was best friends with the dogs.
My guess is they played and it got out of hand. the cat was found washed and nicely laid out on the dog bed when they got home. they were shocked that the dogs could do that to their sister... They did nothing wrong... they played with the cat something they had always done... but this time no one was there to say your too rough. I think they played tug and broke it's back but without breaking the skin, it didn't have a tooth mark on it. but it was soaking wet as if they had tried to comfort it and didn't unsderstand why their friend isn't playing anymore.

Re: I was just wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this before?

Thank for the support, and comments i really do appreciate it.Knowing i'm not alone w/ this is a big help.

I dont plan on getting anymore cats.As far as letting them run loose together, everyone has their own spot,Lanee stays in my bedroom,Triton(puppy) in his create and Ezra in his create. The cats are out in the house so they can get to their litterbox. While i'm gone.If i'm here they are out, except the old cat he likes to sleep in my bed if no one else is in the room.
I guess i just dont understand why she just suddenly started doing this. She was fine before we lost Zac.

And the neighbors cats all run free here. All my cats are neutered,so no babies from them, unlike the people up the road who have 10 cats and they all have kittens all the time. And my other cat is an inside cat.He prefers to have the easy life in his older age.

Re: I was just wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this before?

Both of my dogs are very interested in the cats but have never tried to attack them. If the cats run, the dogs will chase. If they sit still, they just like to sniff and wiggle-butt (Rocco likes to lay his head on them ). However, I do have the steps leading upstairs babygated so the cats can be at peace. A cat that would wander into the yard does so at their own risk - I really don't know what the dogs would do in that situation as I have not seen it happen (I think the neighborhood cats know what areas dogs are in because they used to be all over my property before I got Rocco.)
